Construction and opening of the plant

Volkswagen Group RUS plant in Kaluga

The decision to build the plant was made by the group management on May 26, 2006. There were over 70 alternatives to choose from when choosing a location; they finally decided on Kaluga. The Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Sergei Naryschkin , and the Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, Martin Winterkorn , were present at the plant opening . The plant employs 3,000 people who produce around 150,000 vehicles annually.

In the first year, production was 20,000 units because the construction of the plant was not yet fully completed. At that time there was still no paint shop ; whose completion took place only in early 2009. VW used for the construction of the production plant a total investment of 500 million euros . Between 2013 and 2015, further investments with a volume of 840 million euros are to be made.

With the production stop of automobiles at GAZ , VW CEO Martin Winterkorn signed a takeover contract on June 14, 2011 in order to win another company for Volkswagen and thus take over an assembly hall in Nizhny Novgorod . When the GAZ Volga Siber expires , assembly is to begin there and the units assembled in Russia will increase to 360,000 vehicles. This plan was discussed and approved in the presence of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin . In 2012, 316,000 vehicles were assembled.
