The Wölfersheimer See is a lake east of the Hessian community of Wölfersheim . The lake is almost 40 hectares and is therefore the largest in the Wetterau . He emerged as Tagebaurestsee following the closure of brown coal - mining Wölfersheim . Later it was used as a cooling pond for the Wölfersheim power station. Today it serves as a natural area, as a sailing area , fishing area and for local recreation . Bathing is prohibited.

history

Originated from the Wölfersheim opencast mine

From 1937, the operating brown coal smoldering power plant Hessen-Frankfurt AG (HEFRAG) , a subsidiary of Prussian electricity AG (PREAG) , in the Wetterau brown coal district several lignite - opencast mines to supply the Schwelkraftwerks Wölfersheim . One of the first of these was the Wölfersheim opencast mine , right next to the power plant. After the fields there were charred in 1943, they were partially filled with overburden and the area was recultivated . This left several remaining holes , which over time filled with groundwater . In addition to the largest, the Wölfersheimer See with 37 hectares, there are two smaller lakes a few hundred meters further east and north. Overall, the water areas take up less than half of the former open-cast mine.

Use as a cooling pond

The cooling water distributor was left standing after the power plant was demolished.

For the cooling that every thermal power plant absolutely needs, a method that is rarely found in Germany was chosen for the Wölfersheim power plant: Lake Wölfersheim was used as a cooling basin . This type of cooling is normally not permitted, as the waste heat input leads to heating of the water, which results in a massive change in the natural ecosystem. In the case of Lake Wölfersheim, use was approved as it is not a natural body of water that was only subject to water protection to a limited extent.

Fish fauna

A curiosity: Due to the heat introduced, the lake was so warm that reintroduced subtropical ornamental fish from aquariums such as guppies , goldfish , cichlids , even large species such as panaque or loach as well as various water turtles survived permanently as neozoa . The cichlids in particular developed into a nuisance at times. After the power reduction (1984) and the successive shutdown of the power plant (1991), these species died out again due to the cooling of the lake. Today, predatory fish such as eels , perch , rainbow trout , asp , pike , pikeperch and catfish, as well as non- predatory fish such as carp , tench , bream , roach , rudd and crucian carp can be found in the Wölfersheim open-cast mine .

Natural space and recreational area

As part of the renaturation of the open-cast mine area, by stocking the lake with fish and planting the banks, a valuable biotope was created that was populated by water birds and numerous other species. Shortly after the lake was formed, the maintenance of the fish stocks was transferred from HEFRAG / PREAG to the Wölfersheim fishing club . Today the banks are laid out like a park, in the east the lake borders on a nature reserve .

In 2008 the municipality of Wölfersheim acquired the lake and some of the surrounding areas from E.ON (legal successor to PREAG). The area with the lake is to be developed by the community as a local recreation area and was integrated into the regional Wetterau Lake District project.

A high ropes course was opened next to the lake in mid-2008 .
