Vadim Gennadijewitsch Mesjaz ( Russian Вадим Геннадиевич Месяц ; * 1964 in Tomsk ) is a Soviet- Russian physicist , poet , writer and publicist .

Life

Mesjaz, son of the physicist Gennady Andreevich Mesjaz , studied at Tomsk University and received his doctorate in 1990 as a candidate in physical and mathematical sciences. From 1987 he published poems and from 1988 prose . In 1991 he received the US award New Voices in Poetry and Prose .

1992–2006 he worked in the USA as coordinator of the Russian- US-American cultural program at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken (New Jersey) . He initiated eight Literature - Festivals in the United States and Russia . He edited an anthology of contemporary American poetry (1996 with Arkadi Dragomoschtschenko ) and the anthology of contemporary Russian poetry Crossing Centuries: The New Generation in Russian Poetry (2000 with John High and others). He translated poetry from English ( Dylan Thomas , Edward Foster and others).

In 2004 Mesjaz organized the Center for Russian Literature in Moscow and the Russki Gulliwer publishing project , one of the many publishers in the country for the publication of contemporary poetry and innovative prose for authors outside the normal book market. In autumn 2010 he and Darlene Reddaway held the Alexander Parshchikov Festival in St. Petersburg and Moscow in memory of the poet Alexander Parshchikov, who was one of the founders of Russki Gulliwer. In October 2011, he organized a memorial conference at the Stevens Institute of Technology for the former participants in the Russian-US cultural program Nina Iskrenko , Sergei Kurjochin , Dmitri Prigow , Alexander-Parshchikov and Jelena Schwarz . In 2012 the Center for Russian Literature and Russki Gulliwer published the quarterly literary magazine Gwideon and website .

In 2002 Mesjaz received the Bashov Literature Prize and the Russian Booker Prize for his novel Letschenie Elektritschestwom and in 2005 the Bunin Prize for the short story volume Wok-wok . In 2011 he was awarded the LiteratuRRöntgen Prize at the festival in Yekaterinburg , and the Union of Russian Writers awarded him its prize for the poetry collection Zyganski Chleb (Gypsy Bread) . In 2013 he received the Dawid Burljuk Medal of the Russian Academy for Futuristic Poetry by the poet Sergei Biryukov for his contribution to strengthening the Russian avant-garde . Mesjaz was highly recognized by Joseph Brodsky , Alexander Zinoviev , Mikhail Gasparov and Vyacheslav Ivanov . His poems and prose have appeared in English, German , Italian , French , Latvian , Romanian , Belarusian , Polish and Spanish .

Mesjaz is a member of the Union of Russian writers, the Union of Writers of Moscow, the International Federation of Russian writers (headquartered in London and Budapest ), the New York Department of PEN clubs is the writer in exile , the International PEN Center in Moscow and Chairman of the Commission of the Center for Russian Literature at the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN) . He is a member of the jury of the O. Henry Literature Prize and the jury (poetry category) of the Debjut Literature Prize ( Debut ) for Russian literature. He is the chairman of the Voloshin Video Poetry Competition. In 2014 he founded the Russki Gulliwer Literature Prize , of which he is the curator.
