Waldemar von Roon

Albrecht Johannes Waldemar Graf von Roon (born July 4, 1837 in Berlin , † March 27, 1919 in Krobnitz Castle ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and politician.

Life

Waldemar was a son of Albrecht Graf von Roon . After attending grammar schools in Berlin and Bonn , he graduated from the cadet schools in Wahlstatt and Berlin. Roon then joined the 1st Guards Regiment on May 1, 1855 on foot as a Second Lieutenant . From 1859 to 1862 he attended the War Academy in Berlin. In mid-December 1863 he was assigned as a general staff officer to the high command of the allied army in Schleswig . During the war against Denmark, Roon took part in the battles near Fredericia and Rackebüll , was slightly wounded in the storm on the Düppeler Schanzen and made the transition to Alsen . For his work he was awarded the Red Eagle Order IV class with swords on April 22nd, 1864 . When he was promoted to captain on August 16, 1864, he was transferred to the General Staff . In 1866 Roon was on the General Staff of the II Army Corps on the occasion of the war against Austria . In this position he took part in the battles at Gitschin and Königgrätz . After brief service in the troops, Roon was appointed major in the Great General Staff in 1869 and in April 1870 to serve in the General Staff of the Guard Corps . With the beginning of the war against France he was transferred to the General Staff of the Guard Corps. Roon took part in the battles at Gravelotte , Beaumont , Sedan and Le Bourget as well as the siege of Paris and received both classes of the Iron Cross .

In 1877 he was appointed commander of the Emperor Franz Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 2 based in Szczecin. In 1883, he was appointed major general and commander of the 4th Guards Infantry Brigade . From 1886 he was inspector of the I. Landwehr Inspection and was appointed commander of Posen on July 3, 1888 with the character of lieutenant general . With the award of the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, Roon was put up for disposal on September 19, 1888 with the statutory pension .

Roon was the owner of the Majorate and Krobnitz Castle. From 1893 to 1903 he was a member of the German Conservative Party in the Reichstag . At times he was military advisor to the budget commission of the Reichstag. From 1904 he was a member of the Prussian manor house .

Roon wrote a biography of his father's memorabilia from the life of Field Marshal Count von Roon and was also the editor of his speeches.

On October 21, 1864, Waldemar von Roon married Magdalene Cordelia Henriette Jenny von Blanckenburg, who was seven years his junior in Kardemin (born August 5, 1845 in Kardemin near Greifenberg, † November 21, 1915 in Görlitz). She was a daughter of the politician Moritz Karl Henning von Blanckenburg-Zimmerhausen (1815–1888).
