The district in the forest was first mentioned in a document on December 15, 1724.

From 1871 to 1873 Prince Heinrich XXII. build the Ida-Waldhaus hunting lodge. After his death, the castle was used by the forest administration. After the First World War it housed a convalescent home for tuberculosis sufferers. After the end of the Second World War, state-owned companies set up a company holiday home in the hunting lodge. From 1953 it was used as a vocational school for the state forestry company in Gera, which in 1955 built a new cultural center in the immediate vicinity.

From 1969 onwards the redevelopment into a local recreation area began. The hunting lodge was torn down except for one side wing and converted into a hikers' accommodation, and the cultural center was converted into a restaurant. The animal enclosure and a playground were created. The restaurant and the rest of the hunting lodge have been empty since the mid-1990s.

From 1878 to 1883 the prince also had a mausoleum built. However, like part of the animal enclosure, this is located on Pohlitzer Flur and thus in the area of the city of Greiz . In the autumn of 1891 his wife Ida was carried to the grave there, followed by Heinrich XXII in 1902. himself and finally in 1927 their son, Heinrich the XXIV. In April 1969 the coffins were removed, their contents cremated and the urns buried in the new cemetery in Greiz. After the building was left to decay for years, it was thoroughly restored from 1994 to 1997 and can be visited.

In 1922 Herrmannsgrün , on whose corridor Waldhaus is located, was incorporated into Mohlsdorf.

Today the animal enclosure is a popular destination. The surrounding forests are popular with hikers and cyclists.

additional

At the southern edge of the village there is a geological feature, a triass clod made of shell limestone with flora that is unique for the region. The next shell limestone deposits are today about 60 km northwest in the Jena / Eisenberg area . The so-called Kalkhütte stands there today as a relic of lime mining.
