Walk the Sky is the sixth studio album by the American rock band Alter Bridge . The album was released on October 18, 2019 via Napalm Records . The album reached number one on the Swiss album charts .

Emergence

In February 2019, guitarist Mark Tremonti announced that Alter Bridge would start recording the new album in March. Both he and singer Myles Kennedy have already gathered a lot of ideas. Mark Tremonti already recorded some demos during the tour with his solo band Tremonti . Here he let himself be influenced a little by Synth Wave , especially by the composer John Carpenter , and worked with loops . Singer Myles Kennedy, on the other hand, released an acoustic solo album in 2018 and then felt the urge to "really rock out" again.

For the album, the band used 14 songs including the intro One Life . Originally, the band wanted to release a shorter album with fewer tracks to prevent the listener from "getting lost in a big album". After a while there were so many songs that the musicians had to discard some older ideas. Eventually, according to Mark Tremonti, the band got to the point where they have all the kinds of songs you need for a dynamic album.

Produced and mixed was Walk the Sky again by Michael "Elvis" Baskette , the Myles Kennedy as "the greatest age-Bridge fan in the world" described. The recordings took place again in Studio Barbarosa in Orlando and lasted five weeks. Due to the short time frame, the four musicians worked out the ideas together in the studio. Mark Tremonti sang the song Forever Falling , although he had to tune the guitars down to match his voice. The mastering took Brad Blackwood. The album cover was designed by Daniel Tremonti, a brother of Mark Tremonti. For the song Wouldn't You Rather one was music video rotated.

Myles Kennedy described Walk the Sky as an answer to 2010 album AB III , which deals with lost faith . According to Tremonti, singer Myles Kennedy went through a difficult time and wrote accordingly dark lyrics. The lyrics on Walk the Sky, on the other hand, would be enlightening and free-spirited. Thus, Walk the Sky would change the Yang to AB III , which would be more Yin . A few more songs deal with the perception of spiritual growth, how to shape one's existence and the idea of enlightenment . Parts of the texts were influenced by Far Eastern philosophies.

The song Godspeed was written by Mark Tremonti for Seth Luker, a close friend of the band members. Luker died in 2018 of a cancer . The song Native Son is about the impending loss of identity of the Native Americans. The song Indoctrinated is about a sect leader . Myles Kennedy got the inspiration for the text from a series on Netflix . Pay No Mind deals with the lack of consequences after mistakes by large institutions. Kennedy names the big banks as an example . The text was inspired by the movie The Big Short .

The album title comes from the song Walking on the Sky . According to Mark Tremonti, the song is about people who are looking for the thrill and challenge their own fate. According to Mark Tremonti, this is on the one hand about the fascination for borderline experiences, on the other hand about the conscious (experiencing) life of moments. As an example, Tremonti cited tightrope walkers who balance on a rope and know that they can die in the process. But that's exactly where they would feel alive.

Reviews

Reviews

According to Petra Schurer from the German magazine Metal Hammer, the album scores “with its impressive range of styles”. Alter Bridge would have no problem with stadium rock. However, they also manage to give you those moments in which you are completely alone, full of melancholy. Since Alter Bridge were "a band for everyone", Schurer awarded 5.5 out of seven points. Andreas Schiffmann from the online magazine Musikreviews wrote that Alter Bridge “again in 2019 will be an infallible guarantee for larger-than-life US rock with a metal edge and melodies or riffs for eternity ... covered with a thin patina of Hollywood gay, which one cannot resist, as much as one resists it ”. Schiffmann awarded eleven out of 15 points.

Peter Kubaschk from the online magazine Powermetal.de was more critical. In contrast to the previous albums on Walk the Sky, he did not find a song that “ grabbed his little sleepy baby and never let go”. With the loops used by Mark Tremonti, Kubaschk wondered whether “this idea really did the album good”. Kubaschk described the album as a "slip" and awarded 7.5 out of ten points.
