Walstedde [ 'valstəˌdə ] is a district of Drensteinfurt ( Warendorf district , North Rhine-Westphalia ) in the Münsterland .

history

The first documentary mention was made in 1498 as Walsteden . Until 1843 the village belonged to the parish of Münster . On July 1, 1969, the place was incorporated into the city of Drensteinfurt. The federal highway 63 , which connects Hamm and Münster, crosses the local area on the west side of the village center.

Attractions

St. Lambertus Parish Church

The center of the village is the church square with the St. Lambertus parish church. Due to the Romanesque layout of the oldest surviving part of the building - the west tower of the village church - it can now be concluded that the whole church was originally laid out in Romanesque style . In 1863 there was an extensive renovation known for the first time, during which the tower was also renewed. The roof is a pyramid roof and was covered with slate. The hall-like nave with a gable roof and roof tiles dates from 1740 and was expanded in 1883. The nave consists of a total of six axes. On the south side, in the fifth axis, there is a neo-Romanesque porch with an entrance, above which a tympanum can be found. This contains the figurative representation of the world judge, a Latin inscription and the year 1883.

A rectangular choir adjoins the nave to the east, with triplet windows on the north side. The east side of the choir contains a round-arched window with a hint of measure and framework. A niche-like recess with a base above indicates a saint figure that no longer exists today.

A polygonal sacristy extension with round-arched twin windows was added to the south side of the choir . The windows and design were based on the Romanesque style.

In terms of style, the church, although it was remodeled in the late 19th century, points to the Romanesque : round arches, twin and triple windows, surrounding round arch friezes are modeled on the style of the Middle Ages. The color design also adapts to the highlighting of the epochal elements. The plain white of the surface contrasts with dark ocher of the ornamentation .

On the south side there is an epitaph that reminds of the pastor Anton Dion, who died in Walstedde in 1871 (?).

The interior of the parish church is kept simple. The nave has a flat ceiling with transverse wooden planks, the choir has a simple ribbed vault . In the west side of the nave there is a gallery on which Friedrich Fleiter built the organ in 1870. A neo-Gothic confessional and two rows of simple pews define the space. On the parapet of the organ gallery there are still various brass plates, probably from the end of the 19th / beginning of the 20th century, with the names of long-established Walstedder families engraved on them.

The choir is dominated by a triumphal cross with a 200 cm body. The corpus, carved from oak, attached to a cross beam that was renewed in 1955, is dated to 1160–1180 and was made in the Westphalian region. Typologically, it follows the Ringelheim crucifix . Two other groups of sculptures catch the eye in the eastern end of the nave: in the north a wooden Pietà with the crucified Christ, in the southeast a group of women made of wood.

The stained glass window above the southern entrance is striking: the scene of the Annunciation was depicted in the style of the late 19th century. Angels and Mary are separated by the bars , and there is a dove in the tracery .

In the west tower, a simple octagonal baptismal font made of sandstone with a wooden hood as a cover should be mentioned, which probably dates from the high Middle Ages.

Stones with inscriptions on the north side of the tower document the repeated renovation: 1863, 1980, 1989.

War memorial

The war memorial for those who died in the Wars of Unification was erected in 1889. A dedication is carved on the front of the column: “In memory of the Victorious Wars 1864-1866, 1870/71 −− Erected in 1893 by the thankful Walstedde community”. On the left side there is an almost weathered dedication: "Carl Eickholt died a heroic death in the Battle of Gravelotte on Aug. 18, 1870." In the 1920s, the fifty soldiers from the village who died in the First World War were used A stone plaque with names and dates of death is attached to the base of the column.
