Walter Gerhard Friedrich Kremser (born October 16, 1909 in Tartu , Estonia , † November 7, 2000 in Iserlohn ) was a German forestry practitioner and forest scientist . He was best known for his forest history work. With its comprehensive presentation of Lower Saxony forest history. An integrated cultural history of north-west German forestry (1990) he set standards in forest history.

Live and act

The German-Balte Walter Kremser, son of a chief forester, initially worked as a forester from 1934 to 1938, but during this time he also studied forestry and regional culture at the university in his native town of Dorpat (Tartu) . After graduating in 1937, he worked from 1938 to 1941 as forester at the Permisküla forestry offices and later Roela, a huge administrative district far from civilization close to the Russian border. After the Soviet annexation of the Baltic region in World War II , he was resettled in Hanover in 1941 . There he initially worked as a district assistant in a Hanoverian monastery forest office , which he then headed. But this activity ended as early as 1942 when he was called up for military service.

It was not until 1949 that he was finally able to return to Germany and continue his career in the Lower Saxony state forest administration. From 1950 to 1966 he worked in the Lower Saxony Forest Management and Surveying Office in Braunschweig , initially as a forest judge and from 1958 as an inspection officer for a group of forest judges. Through this activity he not only got to know all of Lower Saxony's forest areas, but was also involved in the design of their future management at a crucial point. His specialty were forest and water management problems.

Then Kremser was attached to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry appointed of Lower Saxony, where he served as Country forester and later Oberland forester from 1966 to 1974 as a consultant for silviculture , forest management and forest protection worked. The area of responsibility of the department also included public relations , landscape maintenance , business administration , advanced training and youth forest homes . He wrote numerous basic decrees and for the first time formulated guidelines for the consideration of the interests of land maintenance in the Lower Saxony state forests. This led to the establishment of forest landscape plans . He also initiated the establishment of natural forest reserves for teaching and research as well as a mapping of forest functions for the entire forest in Lower Saxony.

Under his supervision, the site mapping in the Lower Saxony state forests was largely completed. The evaluations were implemented in comprehensive guidelines for long-term regional silvicultural planning, the aim of which, according to Kremser, is “the establishment, maintenance and preservation of forests that are healthy in themselves and that are as resistant to external influences and stresses as possible, that offer people a wide range of protection and recreation in the long term able to produce valuable wood ”. This set the course for ecologically sound silviculture. Kremser also played a major role in coping with the hurricane disaster of November 13, 1973 . After retiring in 1974, he was editor and editor in charge of the five-volume documentation of this catastrophe from 1977 to 1980.

In addition, he worked as a lecturer in forest history at the Hildesheim-Holzminden University of Applied Sciences. The forestry faculty of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen awarded him an honorary doctorate on December 15, 1992 . Kremser was also editor -in- chief of the series Aus dem Walde published by the Lower Saxony forest administration for many years . Known and respected by his publications and lectures far beyond the forestry sector, Kremser was one of the most prominent German foresters of his time. Kremser not only had a high Classical humanist education, but drew his profound knowledge and from its more comprehensive than 4000 volumes private library, the many valuable old tomes with topics to forestry , botany , pharmacology , history and philosophy contained. The music lover was also active as an artist, carving, drawing and painting in wood. He was a passionate hunter and was considered an excellent expert on the lichen and moss flora .

Kremser, whose bibliography includes more than 150 titles (books and specialist articles), has emerged primarily with forest history work, such as the comprehensive account of Lower Saxony Forest History (1990). In this 965-page work, Kremser spanned far beyond the federal state of Lower Saxony and the narrower area of forestry. He has also devoted himself intensively to investigating the forest history of his Estonian homeland. This resulted in the standard work Epochs in Estonia's Forest History (1998). The Academic Forestry Society of Estonia had already awarded him honorary membership during its general meeting on May 13, 1994. In his hometown of Tartu, the memory of Kremser is also kept alive, among other things by the local "Academic Society for German-Baltic Culture".

In addition, Kremser was one of the founding members of the Federation of German Foresters in Lower Saxony and remained a member of the Hanover regional group in the Lower Saxony state association after he moved to Iserlohn.

Oberlandforstmeister a. D. Dr. hc Walter Kremser died on November 7th, 2000 in Iserlohn. His bilingual memoirs appeared posthumously in 2003 under the title Metsale pühendatud elu or A life for the forest .
