Walter Schmerbach
Gustav August Wilhelm Schmerbach (born April 22, 1896 in Hamburg ; † August 22, 1974 in Horn-Bad Meinberg ), called "Gosch", was a German football player .
Career
Schmerbach, who worked as a bank clerk away from the football field, played from 1912 to 1926 - alternately - for two clubs in the Hamburg area as a left defender . The 1919/20 season he played for the SC Union of 1903 from Altona in the championship held by the Hamburg-Altona district .
Moved to Hamburger SV , he belonged to the club from 1920 to 1922 and was used in the North German League / North District in the first season when the North German Championship was played in two regional leagues . With Hamburger SV he was unbeaten and eight points ahead of Holstein Kiel as the winner of the Northern District League. The two finals against Hannover 96 , the winner of the Südkreisliga, were both won with an overall result of 11: 1. The success entitled Hamburger SV to participate in the final round of the German championship; the quarter-finals held on May 22, 1921 at Duisburger SV , in which it had its finals premiere, was lost with 1: 2 after extra time.
The following season he played in the Alster district of the North German League, which was expanded to six "districts". At the end of the season he finished third with his team, but took part in the final round of the North German Football Championship with Hamburger SV as defending champion . With one point ahead of Holstein Kiel , HSV became North German champions. Due to the recent success, Schmerbach and his club were again represented in the final round of the German championship. He played three games, but in the end - not least due to the resignation of his club - the championship title remained vacant.
After he had contested the quarter-finals , which he won 5-0 against Stettin FC Titania on May 21, 1922 , the semi-finals, which he won 4-0 against FC Wacker Munich on June 4, followed . The final against 1. FC Nürnberg , scheduled for June 18 at the German Stadium in Berlin, ended 2-2 after 90 minutes and found no winner despite extra time. The repeat final, scheduled seven weeks later on August 6th in the VfB Stadium in Leipzig, in which Schmerbach was not used, also found no winner with 1: 1 after extra time, as it had to be canceled by referee Peco Bauwens . The reason for this was stipulated by the rule that this measure must be taken when a team only had seven instead of the required eight players. This was the case with Heinrich Träger's dismissal in the 100th, Willy Boess’s dismissal in the 18th minute and Anton Kugler and Luitpold Popp's injuries to the Nuremberg side. Hamburger SV, who had been declared champions, renounced the title.
The first half of the 1922/23 season completed Schmerbach again for the SC Union of 1903 in the Elbe district , which his team completed as winners. Returned to Rothenbaum during the 1923/24 season, he could be used again for the first time on March 30, 1924 at Eintracht Braunschweig , the HSV won 3-0. Until June 1926 he was again active for Hamburger SV.
As a winner in the Alster district in 1922/23 , now in the league class Greater Hamburg, the team had also participated in the final round of the North German Championship . With the successful qualification game against Borussia Harburg , the successful quarter-final game at Eintracht Hannover and the bye in the semifinals, Hamburger SV moved into the final. The final held on April 29, 1923 in the Hoheluft Stadium against Holstein Kiel was won 2-0. In the final round of the 1922/23 German Championship , Hamburger SV won the final held on June 10, 1923 in Berlin 3-0 against SC Union Oberschöneweide .
The season 1923/24 closed the HSV with two titles; first he won the championship in the Greater Hamburg district for the first time, then and again the North German championship.
In the following season , Hamburger SV again reached the final match Greater Hamburg , which this time was lost 2: 3 against the winner from the Elbe district, Altona 93 . As second and through the qualification against Stralsunder SV 07 - extremely successful with 14: 0 - but participant in the final round of the North German Championship , it was completed first.
Schmerbach completed his last season for Hamburger SV again as a member of the squad with victory in the Greater Hamburg final ; the final round of the North German Championship was only runner-up , one point behind Holstein Kiel . "Gosch" himself had played in a championship game (4: 1 at SV St. Georg ).
