The North German Football Championship 1921/22 was the 16th football championship held by the North German Football Association . Hamburger SV was the winner in the final tournament with one point ahead of Holstein Kiel . With this victory Hamburg qualified for the German soccer championship 1921/22 , in which they reached the final after victories over FC Titania Stettin and FC Wacker Munich . The final against 1. FC Nürnberg ended 2-2, and the replay seven weeks later also ended in a draw after referee Peco Bauwens abandoned the game after the first extra time when Nürnberg was reduced to seven players due to being sent off and injuries. At its annual meeting in November, the majority of the German Football Association declared HSV the German champions, but the latter immediately renounced this title.
Mode and overview
At this season, the regional "North German League" was retained, but expanded from two to six seasons. In addition to the north and south districts last season, there were west, east, Alster and Elbe districts. With the exception of Western Pomerania and the Northern Harz, all districts were represented among the 46 league clubs. The winners of these leagues qualified for the North German football finals. In addition, the North German defending champion was qualified for the finals. This was the luck of Hamburger SV , because they only reached 3rd place in the Alster district, which would not have been enough to qualify for the final round.

Greater Hamburg (with Northern Hanover)
The league clubs from the districts of Hamburg-Altona and Northern Hanover (Harburg and Wilhelmsburg) were combined in the Alster and Elbe districts in 1921/22. After the season, the regional "North German League" was not continued, the championship games were again held separately by district (which were renamed to "districts" after a reform of the association structure in 1922!). In this way, the clubs from Harburg and Wilhelmsburg also migrated back to the district (now district) of northern Hanover. - It wasn't that far yet: This time both season winners and Hamburger SV qualified as defending champions for the north German finals.
