Wehnsen ( Low German Wähnßen ) is a district of the municipality of Edemissen in the Peine district in Lower Saxony .

geography

The place Wehnsen is north of the district town of Peine between the two regional centers Hanover and Braunschweig on the edge of the Südheide.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1274 as "wedensen" in the feudal register of the noblemen Luthard and Buchard von Meinersen. It was not until later, in 1375, that “wetense de horst”, the Wehnserhorst, appeared for the first time in a document in the copy book of the Lords of Oberg .

From 1532 to 1885 the place belonged to the Gografschaft Edemissen in the Amt Meinersen . In 1885 it was incorporated into the Peine district.

In 1966 Eltze formed a joint community with the villages of Dedenhausen , Wehnsen, Plockhorst , Eickenrode and Ohof .

In the course of the regional reform in Lower Saxony , on March 1, 1974, the unified municipality of Edemissen was formed from the localities of the joint municipality of Edemissen and eight other independent municipalities.

The Protestant denomination was already consolidated in the early 16th century. The Matthäus-Kapelle is one of a total of five chapel communities in the parish of the Martin Luther parish of Edemissen.

coat of arms

In the blue shield there is a golden double spiral with a thickened bar. The sculpted double spirals on the beams of two old farmhouses in Wehnsen served as a template. The coat of arms is in the Guelph colors of the Lüneburg part of the Guelph lands.

Culture and sights

  • The Matthäus Chapel in Wehnsen was probably built as a half-timbered building in 1701.
  • The Wehnser potato market is known far beyond the borders of the region and takes place every two years, usually on the last weekend in September. Several tens of thousands of visitors then populate the small village.

In addition to kindergartens, there are now elementary schools in Edemissen (there are also reliable elementary schools in three districts ), secondary school and secondary school . The primary school for Wehnsen is in the village of Plockhorst. Secondary schools such as grammar school and vocational school are located in the district town of Peine.
