Mödesse ( Low German Me'esse ) is a village in the municipality of Edemissen in the Peine district in Lower Saxony .
geography
Mödesse is located north of the district town of Peine between the two regional centers of Hanover and Braunschweig on the edge of the Südheide.
The place is surrounded by Blumenhagen in the north, Meerdorf ( Wendeburg municipality ) in the southeast, Stederdorf (town of Peine ) in the southwest and the main town of the municipality, Edemissen , in the northwest.
history
The place is first mentioned in 1413 as "Müddesse". "... a meadow was one of the goods that were pledged to the city of Braunschweig by the Neubrück office ". In the tax register of the Meinersen Office from 1616, two farms are reported: "... they don't even have to celebrate the castle, they owe the succession and they also have to sell their cattle." It goes on to say: "... by the way, they are interest people of the Braunschweig council". From 1532 to 1885 the place belonged to the Gografschaft Edemissen in the Amt Meinersen . Mödesse has been part of the Peine district since then. In 1965 the previously independent municipalities of Edemissen, Alvesse, Blumenhagen, Mödesse and Voigtholz-Ahlemissen merged to form the joint municipality of Edemissen . In the course of the territorial reform in Lower Saxony, on March 1, 1974, the unified municipality of Edemissen was formed from the localities of the integrated municipality of Edemissen and eight other independent municipalities.
The good
The Mödesser Hof estate looks back on an eventful history . Even before 1840, a merchant's son from Peine had the farm built on the forest and wasteland leased from the Braunschweig large orphanage BMV . The builder miscalculated financially a few years later. In 1847 he gave up and emigrated to Venezuela. After that, various owners and tenants replaced each other in quick succession.
The coin finds
In 1890 a farmer uncovered a vessel with around 3000 coins while plowing his field. These were hollow coins - so-called bracteates . A second find on the same field in 1956 with over 2000 bracteates again drew attention to Mödesse. Curious - a memorial stone erected in 1991 to commemorate the coin finds soon disappeared without a trace. The Mödesser later set up another memorial stone for the coin finds in the town center next to the memorial. This is still there today.

Three hollow coins minted on one side, so-called bracteates, two mintings by Duke Heinrich with a looking, striding lion, and an episcopal Hildesheim coin with a cross, represent the treasure found here in the Mödesser coat of arms. Although the pieces are silver, they appear golden on a blue background to remind of Mödesse's centuries-long membership of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg through the two colors blue-gold (yellow).
