The Kahla Treaty was a contract concluded in Kahla in 1554 between the Counts of Henneberg - Schleusingen and the Ernestine Wettins . He envisaged the takeover of the county of Henneberg by the Wettins with childless death of the Henneberg counts. This case occurred with the death of Count Georg Ernst in 1583.

history

prehistory

The Counts of Henneberg divided into three lines in 1274. After the lines of Henneberg- Hartenberg (until 1379) and Henneberg- Aschach - Römhild (until 1549) died out, only the line of the lordly Henneberg - Schleusingen county remained .

The Kahla Treaty of 1554

On September 1, 1554, in the town hall of Kahla between the Ernestine dukes Johann Friedrich II. , Johann Wilhelm I and Johann Friedrich III. the younger , as well as Count Wilhelm, Georg Ernst and Poppo von Henneberg decided on the Ernestine-Henneberg hereditary brotherhood . By assuming the debts of the Hennebergers, the Ernestines acquired the right to all of their property.

Administration of the county after the Counts of Henneberg died out in 1583

After the dear Counts of Henneberg died out in 1583, the Ernestine and Albertine Wettins were able to make equally justified claims to inheritance. The inheritance dispute that followed was only able to avoid the Hennebergian share in the Schmalkalden rule , which due to the agreements of the Salzung Treaty of August 1583 now came fully into the possession of the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel . The place Schwarza had already been taken over by the Counts of Stolberg in 1549 . About the other part of the Henneberg inheritance there were division negotiations between the Elector August , reg. 1553–1586, (Albertiner) and the Ernestine dukes of Saxe-Weimar and Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach who were also entitled to inherit . 7/12 of the Henneberg possessions should go to the Ernestines and 5/12 to the Albertines. After the death of Elector August in 1586, the negotiations were discontinued without result and the county came under joint administration based in Meiningen .

Division of the county after 1660

Since Ernestiner and Albertiner could not agree on the inheritance, the county of Henneberg was dissolved in 1660/61. The division of the county was regulated in the Weimar Treaty (Saxon Partition Treaty). The Electoral Saxon inheritance claims of 5/12 of the county had already been assigned in 1657 within the Albertine house to the secondary school - Principality of Saxony-Zeitz . The Ernestine share of 7/12 shared the duchies of Saxe-Weimar (1640–1672), Saxe-Gotha (1640–1680) and Saxe-Altenburg (1603–1672). Saxe-Altenburg received 3.5 / 12 of the area and Saxe-Weimar together with Saxe-Gotha received the remaining portion, which they shared in 1661. The Fischberg office remained in common ownership. However, since the administration took place from the Kaltennordheim office , the directorate was handed over to Sachsen-Weimar via the office.

Further development of the areas after the division

The Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg became extinct in 1672. Then the offices of Meiningen, Maßfeld and Themar, the Behrungen winery, the Hof zu Milz and the Henneberg estate came to the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha , which from then on bore the name of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg .

When the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar was divided , the Kaltennordheim office came to Sachsen-Eisenach in 1672 , while the Ilmenau office remained with Sachsen-Weimar.

After the death of Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg , the duchy was divided among his seven sons in 1680, whereby the associated offices were transferred to the subsequent states of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg , Saxe-Coburg and Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld , Sachsen-Meiningen , Sachsen-Römhild and Sachsen-Hildburghausen were divided.

The Saxon authorities Schleusingen, Suhl and Kühndorf with Benshausen of the former county of Henneberg fell back to the Electorate of Saxony after the Saxon-Zeitz line had expired in 1718 . They came to Prussia through the Congress of Vienna in 1815 , where they formed the Schleusingen district in the province of Saxony .
