The Weltkulturerbelauf (abbreviated WKEL ) is a road and cross-country race in Bamberg . It has taken place every two years since 2003 (usually on the first Sunday in May); the 9th WKEL took place on May 5, 2019. The running routes lead u. a. through Bamberg's old town, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993 . The running event is sponsored by the Bamberg World Heritage Run . V. organized and organized in cooperation with the city of Bamberg. In terms of route profile, it is one of the most demanding of the major half marathons in Germany. The program also includes two shorter runs over 4.4 and 10.9 km and, since 2005, two well-attended school runs over 4.1 and 1.6 km and a Bambini run (800 m).

history

Historical antecedents of the World Heritage run are the relay race "Across Bamberg" and the "Bamberger city run". The relay race was first organized on July 11, 1948; later it was renamed the "Domreiter relay race". The last run took place in May 1967. The “Bamberg City Run”, also known as the “Sandkerwalauf”, took place from 1984 to 1996 annually at the Sandkerwa .

Michael Wehner is considered to be the trigger and “instigator” of the Bamberg World Heritage Run. In 2001, the editor of the regional newspaper Fränkischer Tag asked Helmut Müller , Bamberg city councilor and member of the Bavarian state parliament , to organize a run in Bamberg after he had completed the Munich marathon :

“Dear Mr. Müller, why wander into the distance? Anyone who wants to act as an ambassador for sport is needed much more at home. Make sure that there is a Bamberg Marathon as soon as possible. [...] In times when sport is an important, soft location factor, you should leave no stone unturned: So that Bamberg is in top form. "

Helmut Müller took up the suggestion, gathered a team of helpers and organizers around him and formed an "initiative group". Birgit Dietz and Rupert Gramss proposed a world culture run . The original idea of running a marathon in Bamberg was later abandoned.

A test run was carried out in 2002, after which Joschka Fischer gave the following verdict: "Next to New York this is the most beautiful city route that I know!"

On May 4, 2003, the 1st Bamberg World Heritage Run took place. The run was organized by Stadtmarketing Bamberg e. V. , host of the City Association for Sport Bamberg e. V. and patron of the politician Helmut Müller. On September 12, 2003, the World Heritage Run e. V. founded. The first chairman is Helmut Müller.

In the run-up to the 2nd World Heritage Run, which took place on May 1, 2005, there were disputes and irritations: For example, representatives of the World Heritage Association, which organized and organized the run, considered canceling the event at short notice - two weeks before the start . The disputes were triggered by an ambush marketing campaign planned by Klaus Stieringer, managing director of the Bamberg City Marketing Association . He wanted to hold the first Bamberg shopping night on Saturday, April 30, the evening before the run. The chairmen of the running club Helmut Müller and Karl Schlichtig rejected "... the connection between buying and running, sport and commerce ..." and accused Stieringer of "free-riding" and a lack of consultation. The dispute came to an end because the government of Upper Franconia in Bayreuth prohibited the store opening hours planned by city marketing until 10 p.m.

The artist Natalie Gutgesell made a documentary about the 2nd Bamberg World Heritage Run . The Polish artist Ryszard Kajzer , who received a scholarship from the International House of Artists Villa Concordia in Bamberg (2003–2004), designed a logo and poster for the run; it “... combines the silhouette of Bamberg with the shape of a sports shoe. For example, Kajzer drew a jogging shoe with pointed spikes from church steeples. "

The 3rd Bamberg World Heritage Run took place on May 6, 2007, on the birthday of the founder of the diocese, Heinrich II. The patron of the event was the Mayor of Bamberg, Andreas Starke . All runs, with the exception of the 4.4 km run, were booked out months before the official entry deadline in March. According to official estimates by the police, around 25,000 to 35,000 spectators attended the event. Compared to the first event, almost twice as many runners came to the finish line in the half marathon.

At the 4th WKEL, which took place on May 3, 2009, there were problems with the time measurement: “Some starters who have reached the finish do not appear in the time sheets at all, while other runners give the wrong time - the According to Computur (sic!), one athlete crossed the finish line much more slowly than was actually the case. ”The running routes of the main runs were slightly changed due to the new construction of the chain bridge.

Originally announced for May 1, 2011, the 5th World Heritage Run only took place on the second Sunday, on May 8, 2011 ( Mother's Day ) due to the May Day holiday .

The 6th World Heritage Run on May 5, 2013 was overshadowed by the death of a 54-year-old runner in a half marathon.

stretch

Most of the running routes lead through Bamberg's old town. It has the largest intact historical city center in Germany and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993 . The various competitions will start with a time delay in the street Weide (near the Markusplatz) and end on the Maximiliansplatz in front of the New Town Hall.

The half marathon ( Sparkasse run , after the sponsor Sparkasse Bamberg ) leads first over the left arm of the Regnitz to Michelsberg Monastery and then to Altenburg , where the highest point of the route is reached at km 5. Along the Carmelite Monastery on Kaulberg , St. Stephen's Church and the Upper Parish , you walk back down to the city center, where Geyerswörth Palace and Böttingerhaus are passed before entering the Hain City Park . On the right bank of the Regnitz you return to the city center, where you first touch Königstraße and then you get back to the island area over the chain bridge. Via Heumarkt and Markusbrücke it goes to the left bank of the Regnitz with a view of Little Venice and then to a final ascent to the New Residence , the cathedral and the Jakobskirche . The last part of the route leads past the old court , the old town hall and the Martinskirche to the finish on Maxplatz. A total of 280 meters in altitude have to be mastered.

The 10.9 km run ( brose run , named after the sponsor Brose Fahrzeugteile ) is identical to the half marathon for the first two kilometers, but then turns directly to the cathedral and thus skips the loop over the Altenburg. As far as the inner city passages are concerned, the rest of the course is largely identical to the long route, but the Hainpark is only touched on its northern edge. The gradients add up to 75 meters in altitude.

The 4.4 km run ( wieland run , named after sponsor Wieland Electric ) is identical to the main route for the first kilometer, but then returns directly to the city center via the left bank of the Regnitz and is identical to the last section from the Markusbrücke of the half marathon. The course covers an altitude of 35 meters.

The runs are rather demanding not only because of the profile, but also because of the cobblestones in the old town. The time was measured with a Bibchip , since 2011 with the Easychip of the Davengo timepiece.
