The Middle Rhine Marathon was a marathon in the Middle Rhine Valley with the goal in Koblenz , which first took place in June 2005. The program also included a half marathon (also for walkers and Nordic walkers ), a 10 km run as well as a marathon and half marathon for inline skaters . The 11th and last Middle Rhine Marathon took place in May 2015.

history

The Middle Rhine Marathon took place for the first time in 2005. In the first few years the event operated under the name RZ-Mittelrhein-Marathon, from 2011 to 2013 under the name Hochwald-Mittelrhein-Marathon, named after the title sponsors Rhein-Zeitung and Hochwald Foods . In October 2015, the organizer announced on its homepage that the event would no longer be held in its previous form in the future. As part of a complete realignment, the competition was replaced by the Koblenz Sparkassen Marathon from 2017 .

Since 2008, the Middle Rhine Marathon route has been one of the venues for the German Inline Cup .

route

The Middle Rhine Marathon leads through the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley . The original route began in Oberwesel and ran on the left bank of the Rhine via St. Goar , Boppard , Spay and Rhens to Koblenz and the Deutsches Eck . The route has a slight gradient of 9.3 meters.

The marathon mainly runs along federal highway 9 , which runs parallel to the Rhine , but the route has been slightly changed several times. In 2010 and 2011, the finish area at the Deutsches Eck was not usable due to the Federal Horticultural Show and the marathon ended on Mainzer Straße at Mainzer Tor. In 2011 there were additional changes to the route due to construction work. This year both the start of the marathon and the half marathon took place in Boppard. The runners of the marathon first ran up the Rhine to the Hirzenach district of Boppard and from there back down the Rhine to the finish in Koblenz. In 2012 the original route from Oberwesel to Koblenz was chosen again. Due to extensive construction work in St. Goar, the marathon was held from 2013 as a turning point route with start and finish at the Deutsches Eck.

The city of Boppard is exactly halfway where the starting area of the half marathon is. The route of the half marathon is identical to the second half of the marathon and also ends at the Deutsches Eck. The 10 km run was started in Rhens until 2014 and also followed the route of the marathon to Koblenz. In 2015 the start took place for the first time at the Deutsches Eck and led to the turning point near the Koblenz brewery .

The route of the inline marathon deviates slightly from the route of the classic marathon in some areas for safety reasons. In this discipline , the route is considered one of the fastest marathon routes in Germany.
