action
The idiot detective Harry Crumb, the last offspring of a detective dynasty, is engaged by Eliot Draisen to investigate a staged kidnapping case. Everyone is certain that Crumb cannot and will not solve this case. With his good-natured acumen, which is based exclusively on completely obvious events, Crumb initially seems to live up to the claim to be a hopeless case. At the last moment, with the help of Nikki Downing, the kidnapping victim's sister, he solves the riddle and confronts both the kidnapper - his own boss Eliot Draisen - and Nikki's creeping stepmother as an attempted murderer.

Reviews
Richard Harrington described the film in the Washington Post on February 4, 1989 as "shabby" ("crummy"). John Candy is not able to carry the film alone. Harrington also criticized the script and the direction.
The television magazine Prisma wrote: “In 1988, director Paul Flaherty directed this entertaining crime comedy. The wit, pace and timing are not always of the same quality, but good entertainment is enough, especially since the detective comedy has the necessary bite. "
The Cinema editorial team said: “The role of over-the-top travesty freak Harry Crumb was tailor-made for Canadian comedian John Candy, who died in 1994 at the age of 43. The heavyweight, which literally filled the screen, made a name for itself with notable supporting roles (“ Splash ”, “ The Little Horror Shop ”) before Hollywood dared to focus on Candy's comic talents (“ Alone with Uncle Buck ”, “ A ticket for two »). Candy also gives grotesque characters a warmth that protects them from cheap denunciation. So his Harry Crumb is much more than just a «strange number». "
The lexicon of international films judged: “A small, kind-hearted crime comedy whose gags are of very different levels and which sometimes lacks the right timing; overall largely entertaining entertainment. "
