Werner Sonntag (born June 22, 1926 in Görlitz in Lower Silesia ) is a German journalist , running pioneer and author. As an apologist for adventure and ultra long distance running, he dealt extensively with the psychology of running.

Born in Görlitz, he switched to journalism after completing his training as a new teacher . In 1952 he moved from East Berlin to the Federal Republic of Germany .

He worked as a newspaper and magazine editor until 1991, including 17 years for the Stuttgarter Zeitung . He was also an employee of other papers - including ZEIT , Spiridon , Volkssport and "Runner's World" - and editor-in-chief of Condition. Since 2002 he has been writing a weekly column in the Internet magazine "LaufReport".

In 2003 he was awarded the Media Award of the Munich Marathon , in 2006 with the Adolf Weidmann Prize, and in 2014 with the Horst Milde Award.

Running career

Werner Sonntag started running on medical advice in 1966. His first two marathons were in Baarn and in the Black Forest in 1968 .

  • In 1972 he first took part in the 100 km from Biel .
  • In 1981 he took part in the Deutschlandlauf (pilot study by Prof. Jung) over 1092 km in 20 days.
  • In 1993 he became European champion in the M 60 age group at the 1st Veterans Championship in the 100 km run in Palamós .
  • 1989 finisher of the Spartathlon in 35:21:19 hours, 1990 in 35:37:14. Both times he was the oldest participant. In 1992 he ended the Spartathlon with a delay and was therefore not rated.

Werner Sonntag ran 339 marathons and ultramarathons.

He also set up the first running club in Stuttgart in 1974 and helped found the Schönbuch Marathon .
