Quakers settled in the area in the mid- 17th century . Other settlers bought land from the Algonquin Indians . The main livelihood of the inhabitants was initially agriculture, especially sheep breeding . The settlers also employed many African slaves , whom they released for religious reasons in 1775 and who then built their own houses and opened new businesses in the village. After the American Revolution , settlers from Italy and Germany also settled in Westbury. The construction industry developed as a new branch of industry. In the middle of the 20th century , the population grew due to increased immigration from Latin America and the Caribbean .
