The Westchester County Center is a multi-purpose hall in the US city of White Plains , Westchester County , in the southeast of the state of New York . The event hall is used for concerts and sporting events as well as local trade fairs , exhibitions , meetings , seminars , theater performances , conventions and public and community events. The hall offers a maximum of 5000 seats.

history

The center was designed in 1924 by the Westchester Recreation Commission as a versatile recreational facility. The architecture firm Walker & Gillette designed the building in the Art Deco style . A local construction company won the contract to build the Westchester County Center at a cost of $ 785,000  . On May 22, 1930, the center was inaugurated with an opening gala. The pianist Percy Grainger , the tenor Edward Johnson , the organist Palmer Christian and more than 1,500 choristers performed. There were also many other artists and bands such as The Beach Boys , Glenn Miller and His Orchestra , Ray Charles , Bob Dylan , Bo Diddley , Judy Garland , Liza Minnelli , James Brown , Kenny Rogers , John Sebastian , The Temptations Review feat. Dennis Edwards , Rosa Ponselle , Marian Anderson , The Soul Survivors , Paul Robeson , The Highwaymen , Robert Merrill , WC Handy and Sopwith Camel have given concerts at the Westchester County Center over the years. The women's volleyball team the New York Liberties from the Major League Volleyball (MLV) was established from 1987 to 1989 in White Plains. The Westchester Knicks , a farm team of the New York Knicks , from the NBA G-League have been playing their home games at the center since 2014 . In February 2018, the women's basketball team of New York Liberty , Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), announced the move from the large Madison Square Garden with around 20,000 seats to the smaller arena of White Plains. You will only return to the Garden for selected games . In 2019 they left the Westchester County Center and moved to the Barclays Center .
