The West German Cup 1973/74 was the 24th and last staging of the cup competition organized by the Football Association of North Rhine-Westphalia (WFV), which served as a qualification for the DFB Cup . Arminia Bielefeld won the cup by beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the final for the second time after 1966. The semi-finalists of the West German Cup qualified for the 1973/74 DFB Cup, alongside Bielefeld and Dortmund these were Alemannia Aachen and SG Wattenscheid 09 .
The nine North Rhine-Westphalian Bundesliga clubs , namely VfL Bochum , Fortuna Düsseldorf , MSV Duisburg , Rot-Weiss Essen , 1. FC Köln , Borussia Mönchengladbach , Rot-Weiß Oberhausen , FC Schalke 04 and Wuppertaler SV , were not able to participate in the 1973 West German Cup entitled and automatically qualified for the DFB Cup. With the introduction of the 2nd Bundesliga for the following season 1974/75, the teams of the first two leagues were automatically eligible to participate in the DFB Cup, while the amateur representatives were played through the association cups .

The winners of the four-round games qualified for the 1973/74 DFB Cup . While Dortmund and Aachen failed there in the first main round, Bielefeld made it to the second round and Wattenscheid made it to the quarter-finals.
