Who Cares is an EP and a project by British hard rock and heavy metal musicians Ian Gillan ( Deep Purple ) and Tony Iommi ( Black Sabbath ). The project brings together well-known musicians of the genre for a good cause; In addition to two songs, the CD also contains video documentation and the video clip for one of the songs.
Background and origin
Rock Aid Armenia
On December 7, 1988, an earthquake shook the area around the northern Armenian city of Spitak ( Lori Province ) in the Soviet Union . With an estimated number of at least 25,000 dead and a million homeless, it is one of the worst earthquakes in decades. As a result, humanitarian aid operations by Western organizations in the Soviet Union took place for the first time during the Cold War .
After the news of the disaster, the then Soviet head of state, Mikhail Gorbachev , who came from the Caucasus, returned from a state visit to the USA and visited the earthquake region. In view of the extent of the damage, Gorbachev asked the United States for humanitarian aid after a few days, regardless of the Cold War , for the first time after the Second World War . As a result, several western countries in the Caucasus provided aid, including Germany and Switzerland .
British musicians also tried to help by starting the Rock Aid Armenia project . Among other things, a single was produced for which the Deep Purple title Smoke on the Water was re-recorded and interpreted by numerous artists. Each verse was sung by a different singer, with Ian Gillan, Bruce Dickinson and Paul Rodgers sharing the vocals. Musicians involved included Bryan Adams , Geoff Beauchamp , Ritchie Blackmore , Bruce Dickinson , Geoff Downes , Keith Emerson , Ian Gillan , David Gilmour , Tony Iommi , Alex Lifeson , Brian May , Paul Rodgers , Chris Squire and Roger Taylor , and also acted Jon Lord and John Paul Jones behind the scenes.
Who Cares
As a result of the action, Ian Gillan and Tony Iommi traveled independently to Armenia several times in order to be able to see for themselves the progress and results of the relief measures. In October 2009 they traveled together with Geoff Downes and “Rock Aid Armenia” initiator Jon Dee to Yerevan and Spitak, where they were awarded the Order of Honor of the Country of Armenia for their commitment to the victims of the disaster.
They also visited the rebuilt town of Gyumri , which had been a music school that taught 500 students before the earthquake. It was not possible to rebuild the school in such a way that it could resume normal operations. Iommi and Gillan noticed that the music teachers were teaching their now only 200 students, some of them in tin huts, and came to the conclusion that concrete help was needed here. The school also needed instruments: guitars, flutes, soprano saxophones and drum kits. This problem was resolved shortly after the trip when Iommi and Gillan sent guitars and a drum kit to Gyumri and gave them to the school.
Together with Ian Gillan, Iommi decided to record a charity CD for the music school. This resulted in the song Out of my Mind , which the two musicians wrote together. Another track, Holy Water , was contributed by Ian Gillan and Steve Morris. Out of my Mind was selected as a single and recorded by Iommi and Gillan with the assistance of Linde Lindstrom (guitar), Jason Newsted ( electric bass ), Nicko McBrain ( drums ) and Jon Lord ( keyboards ). The recordings took place in the studios Tone Hall and Sarm West and were produced by Gillan and Iommi.
A video clip was also produced for the title.
Holy Water was recorded with the participation of Ian Gillan (vocals), Tony Iommi, Steve Morse , Michael Lee Jackson (guitars), Randy Clarke (drums), Rodney Appleby (bass) and Jesse O'Brian (organ). Arshak Sahakyan contributed a Duduk solo while Ara Gevorgyan contributed the Duduk intro and some background sounds. A video clip was also produced for the title.
Who Cares was released on May 6, 2011 and is available on CD, vinyl maxi single and as a vinyl single limited to 1,000 copies worldwide.

Rocks magazine considered the single out of rating and wrote under the heading "Legends for a good cause":
“ Iommi cushions the playing field with extensive riffs, so that Gillan can let off steam in the well-known manner. ›Holy Water‹ proves to be the standard, ›Out Of My Mind‹ as a high-flyer, in which the master guitarist in particular shines like it hasn't been for a long time. The video clip for the latter number and a documentation about the project round off the cream part. "
