Oktoberfest host
The operators ( innkeepers ) of the festival tents at the Oktoberfest in Munich are referred to as Wiesnwirt (also spelled Wiesn-Wirt ) . In 2014 there were 14 "large" and 21 "small" Oktoberfest hosts. The division is based on the size of the tents operated. The hosts of the 14 large tents are united in the informal association of Oktoberfest hosts . The association is represented by a spokesman (since the end of 2017 Peter Inselkammer ) and annually presents the beer mug of the Oktoberfest hosts (also: Steinkrug of the festival hosts ). The hosts of the 21 small Oktoberfest tents are organized in the Association of Small Oktoberfest Hosts .
The licenses to operate a beer tent at the Oktoberfest are in great demand. Even if the sale of beer at the Oktoberfest was officially only allowed from 1880, there were shacks in which beer was served before that. Anton Gruber (1783–1843), who has been running the “Zum Prater” restaurant on an Isar island since 1810 , had a beer stall on the hill above Theresienwiese as early as 1818 and ran amusement shops such as a carousel and swings. Michael Schottenhamel (1838–1912) was one of the first to run restaurants at the Oktoberfest, so in 1867 he built a wooden building for the first time with space for 50 guests, in which he served food and offered an entertainment program. It was also he who had the first canvas tent erected on Theresienwiese in 1886. In 1896 he presented a so-called "Bierburg" (large festival hall), which had been designed by the architect Gabriel von Seidl . Even today, the Schottenhamel family provides Oktoberfest hosts, which means they can look back on the longest tradition at Oktoberfest. Hans Steyrer , also host at the Oktoberfest, is considered to be the initiator of today's popular move of the Oktoberfest hosts on the opening day. Licensing
The licenses are awarded by the economic department of the city of Munich, which implements the corresponding decision of an economic committee of the city council known as the "Wiesn committee". The right to propose the tents of the Armbrustschützengilde (Armbrustschützenzelt) and the Schützenverband (Schützen-Festhalle) lies with the two clubs. For the candidates (and their concepts) of the licensees to be proposed by the city, 13 criteria apply, in which up to 11 points are awarded, which are weighted differently in the final calculation: previous contract fulfillment or complaints, festival experience in general and at the Oktoberfest in particular , Expertise and residency of the host as well as the concept, technical standard, attraction and ecological aspects of the concept.
Critics of the catalog of requirements and the award practice point to the cementing of the dominance of the previous license holders. The award procedure makes it impossible for other hosts to be considered in the award. A change of the host or his family takes place accordingly only rarely. When the license for the previous hippodrome was awarded in 2014, there was a public discussion about the award procedure. As a result, an internal audit will in future examine randomly whether the applications have been assessed correctly. The investigation also includes an inspection by the city's anti-corruption officer.
