Wietze Couperus (born March 16, 1942 in Sneek , Netherlands ; also Wytze Couperus ) is a Dutch former football player . The striker was active in the Eredivisie for ADO Den Haag and Telstar , among others . He was also used in an international match for the Dutch national team.

Club career

In his youth, Couperus played at LSC 1890 from his Frisian hometown of Sneek - the club where, looking back, it was “the most beautiful” for him. After moving to Amsterdam , he joined the local club Blauw Wit , where he made his debut in the honor division in the 1962/63 season. In the following season he briefly returned to Friesland for vv Leeuwarden , which was playing in what was then the third professional league, Tweede Divisie . After a year, the Leeuwarder awarded him to the ZFC from Zaandam . In 1965 he went to the third-rate HFC Haarlem , with whom he was champion of the Tweede Divisie in 1967 and two years later rose to second in the first division.

For the 1970/71 season he received a contract from ADO - the Hague swapped him at HFC for the Danish national player Niels-Christian Holmstrøm . Couperus played the club's most successful season in the Eredivisie with ADO. The team of coach Václav Ježek and goalkeeper Ton Thie , with the national players Aad Mansveld , Lex Schoenmaker and Piet de Zoete , the Norwegians "Dutte" Berg and Harry Hestad as well as the young Dick Advocaat stood unbeaten in first place for seventeen weeks. In the end it was only enough to finish third behind champions Feijenoord and Ajax , but thanks to the center forward's 15 goals, ADO qualified for the UEFA Cup .

In the 1971/72 season, the team - after the merger with Holland Sport now as FC Den Haag - reached fifth place in the league and the cup final , which, however, was lost 3-2 to AFC Ajax. In the UEFA Cup Couperus played three times and scored a first-round tie against Aris Bonnevoie a goal; in the second round, however, the FC was knocked out against the Wolverhampton Wanderers . Couperus went to the 1972/73 season to - from his former club Blauw Wit and DWS / A just founded as a merger club - FC Amsterdam , with whom he reached eleventh place at the end of the season. A year later he switched to Telstar from Velsen , where he still worked two seasons as a professional and finished the seasons as sixth and seventh in the Eredivisie. At the end of the 1974/75 season he ended his professional career.

On October 11, 1970, the game in Rotterdam's De Kuip began without him. After the 0-1 by Dragan Džajić , team captain Rinus Israël equalized with a penalty in the 49th minute . Fadrhonc came on for Wietze Veenstra from PSV Eindhoven in the 50th minute ; however, there was no further hit in the game. In the following European Championship qualifier against the GDR selection in the Dresden Rudolf Harbig Stadium , which was lost 1-0, Couperus sat again on the bench, but without being allowed to appear. The 40 minutes playing time against Yugoslavia was his only appearance in the Oranje shirt.
