Piet de Zoete (born November 8, 1943 in Den Haag - Loosduinen , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch football player . He was the Dutch cup winner with ADO Den Haag and played three times in the Nederlands elftal .

Club career

De Zoete, who can be used in defense and midfield, was part of the ADO Den Haag squad from 1962 to 1974, which was renamed FC Den Haag in 1971. At the age of 18 he became a professional and matured under coach Ernst Happel to become a regular player in the team that came third in the 1964/65 season after having advanced to the cup final in 1963 and 1964. 1966 followed another third place in the Eredivisie and another defeat in the cup final; Third places allowed Piet de Zoete and his teammates to gain international experience in the Intertoto Cup .

On June 3, 1968, he and players like ADO legend Aad Mansveld , Kees Aarts and Lex Schoenmaker were part of the team at home in the Zuiderpark Stadium , which beat Ajax Amsterdam with a 2-1 win in the final after four unsuccessful attempts since 1959 ADO brought the first cup win. He then played for ADO in the European Cup and was in all four games against Grazer AK and 1. FC Köln . After the Czechoslovakian Vaclav Jezek took over as coach from Happel in 1969 , ADO played his best season in the Eredivisie in the 1970/71 season with many of the players who had won the cup and new players such as Dick Advocaat . For 17 match days, de Zoete and Co. were unbeaten in first place, but ultimately only came third and qualified for the UEFA Cup competition , in which the team already competed as FC Den Haag. In 1972 de Zoete came again with FC in the cup final and was able to add two more European Cup games to his statistics. In 1974 he ended his active career at the club where it had started - even if the club now had a new name.

National team

Bond coach Georg Keßler appointed de Zoete to the national team for the first time in 1966 ; on September 7, 1966, however, he was only on the bench against Hungary in the European Championship qualification . Eleven days later he was allowed to make his debut in Orange ; in the 1: 2 defeat in a friendly match in Vienna , Keßler replaced him against Austria in the 79th minute for Bennie Muller . He had his first use in the starting lineup on April 5, 1967 again in the European Championship qualification; the game in the central stadium in Leipzig lost the Dutch after 2-0 lead at halftime and a 3-2 intermediate result 3: 4; Henning Frenzel scored three goals for the GDR . After this match, de Zoete was back on the bench for the next few matches. Only on November 29, 1967, he played one last time in the national team; in Rotterdam against the Soviet Union there was a 3-1 victory.

Trainer

Together with Sjaak Swart and others, de Zoete made his coaching license. Initially he was a youth and assistant coach at his home club FC Den Haag. In the 1980/81 season he took over responsibility for the first division team as an interim coach for the first time, when he replaced the sick Hans Kraaij . From 1984 he was responsible for setting up the football school at FC Den Haag. In the 1987/88 season he was again interim coach as the successor to Pim van de Meent , but could not prevent relegation to the Eerste Divisie (second division). His third assignment as a coach he had from April 5, 2001 to the end of the 2000/01 season, when he replaced Stanley Brard in the Eerste Divisie ; this season he was able to keep the club in 16th place just before relegation. In the following season, his teammate from Orange times, Rinus Israël , took over the coaching job.

Off the field

De Zoete has a physiotherapy practice in The Hague. He is currently (2008) a member of the membership council of his parent club ADO Den Haag.
