Wilfredo García Quintana (born October 29, 1977 ) is a retired Cuban wrestler . He became world champion in free style flyweight in 1997 .

Career

Wilfredo García Quintana began wrestling as a teenager in 1986. He concentrated on the free style and belonged to a wrestling club in Pinar del Río . He was mainly trained by Juan Caballero. He studied sports and wrestled at a height of 1.59 meters in the light flyweight and later switched to the flyweight.

In 1993 he appeared for the first time at an international championship, the Junior World Championship for the age group "Cadets" in Duisburg . He won there in the weight class up to 47 kg behind Rakesh Kumar from India and Jamal Mamejew from Russia a bronze medal . A year later, in 1994, he became Junior World Champion in the "Juniors" age group in Budapest in the weight class up to 46 kg. He referred Ilyas Sükrüoglu from Turkey and Ali Mohammad Gholam from Iran to their places. In 1995 he was again junior world champion in Tehran , this time in the "Espoirs" age group and in the light flyweight division. He won ahead of Rudik Margarjan from Armenia and Assen Kumanow from Bulgaria .

In 1997 he started at the World Championships in Krasnoyarsk with the seniors. He surprised the professional world and at the age of 20 became world flyweight champion with victories over Jose Barreto Infante, Venezuela , Romica Rasovan , Germany , Herman Kantojeu , Belarus , Maxim Molonow , Russia and Jin Ju-dong , North Korea .

Wilfredo García Quintana could not repeat this success in the following years. In 1998 he came in 11th place at the World Cup in Tehran . He lost there against Armen Simonjan from Armenia, won over Thomas Röthlisberger from Switzerland and lost to Jung Soon-won from South Korea . In 1999 he reached the World Cup in Ankara after defeating Georgi Gagishvili from Georgia and losing to Mevlana Kulac from Turkey only in 20th place. In 2000 he was also at the Olympic Games in Sydney at the start, but came there after a victory over Nurdin Donbajew from Kyrgyzstan and a defeat against Herman Kantojeu only on the 14th place. The last start in an international championship in his career he finally completed in 2001 at the World Championships in Sofia . In the flyweight division he suffered defeats from Aljaksandr Kantojeu from Russia and Michail Japaridze from Canada and ended up in 19th place.

Wilfredo García Quintana fought very successfully at the Pan American Games and the Pan American Championships. In 1999 he won the Pan-American Games in Winnipeg in front of Paul Ragusa from Canada and Eric John Akin , United States . In 2000 he was the Pan American champion in Cali / Colombia ahead of Lou Rosselli from the United States and Michail Japaridze and 2001 in Santo Domingo / Dominican Republic, ahead of Timothy Hill from the United States and Hector Luis Camacho from Venezuela .
