Wilhelm Arning

Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Arning (born December 20, 1865 in Hanover ; † November 11, 1943 there ) was a physician, colonial politician and member of the German Reichstag .

Life

He was the son of the innkeeper Christoph Arning, attended the grammar school Lyzeum I in Hanover from 1872 to 1884 and the universities of Göttingen , Leipzig , Kiel , Munich , Rostock and Würzburg . From the beginning of 1892 to 1896 he was a doctor in the East African Schutztruppe and then an ophthalmologist in Göttingen until 1899 and later in Hanover. He later traveled to Africa and Asia Minor and worked as a colonial writer. He was also a member of the German Colonial Society .

In 1906 the architect Wilhelm Mackensen built a villa for Arning at Corvinusstraße 5 (today: Ludwig-Barnay-Straße 8) at the corner of Bristol Straße.

From 1907 to 1912 Arning was a member of the German Reichstag for the constituency of Hanover 7 ( Nienburg , Neustadt am Rübenberge , Fallingbostel ) and the National Liberal Party . From 1908 to 1918 he was also a member of the Prussian House of Representatives .

However, he was temporarily unable to exercise this mandate. In 1914 he was surprised by the war on a trip to German East Africa , subsequently worked as a doctor for the troops and was taken prisoner by the British in 1917, where he remained until 1920. Between 1927 and 1933 he was director of the German Colonial School in Witzenhausen . From 1925 to October 1928 he was a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Hanover . After he resigned from the mandate, Friedrich Klinge took his place.
