Wilhelm Kemmler

Wilhelm Kemmler (born January 7, 1864 in Stuttgart ; † 1916 ) was a German architect , royal Bavarian construction clerk and amateur photographer . Officially, he was significantly involved in the construction of the Grafenwoehr military training area . Parts of his photographic legacy are now in the 1st Upper Palatinate Culture and Military Museum in Grafenwöhr .

Life

Wilhelm Kemmler attended a secondary school and studied at the Technical University of Stuttgart . He completed his military service and worked as an architect for various companies in Stuttgart, Krefeld and Mannheim . In 1894 he finally joined the military building administration. From 1907 to 1913, Kemmler in Grafenwöhr was mainly responsible for the establishment and expansion of the local military training area . During this time, Kemmler lived temporarily with his wife and daughter Ida (* July 17, 1910 in Fürth ; † 1988 in Nuremberg ) and a nanny in the Specht estate in Untere Torstrasse in Grafenwoehr. As one of the few owners of a photo camera on site, Wilhelm Kemmler not only took photos of buildings but also of neighboring places such as Neustadt am Kulm , Speinshart or Pressath . The resulting photographs, often with his relatives in the foreground, often became part of the family album . The master photographer Hans Spahn used other photos of Kemmler to publish postcards .
