Wilhelm Lüer (full name: Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Lüer ; * December 28, 1834 in Goslar ; † June 4, 1870 in Linden near Hanover ) was a German architect and university professor .

life and work

Wilhelm Lüer studied from 1850 to 1856 at the Polytechnic School in Hanover with Conrad Wilhelm Hase , whose best pupil and later collaborator he became, before he went into business for himself.

In 1858 he became an architectural assistant to Ludwig Debo at the Polytechnic School and, on October 1, 1869, his successor lecturer in architecture and ornamentation. In 1860, alongside Conrad Wilhelm Hase, he was one of the founders of the Lower Saxony construction works .

The St. Johannis Chapel in the Hanover district of Bemerode

Only the St. John's Chapel in Bemerode , built in 1866/67, remains of his buildings . His main work were the buildings of the zoological garden in Hanover , which were built from 1863 to 1869 . In 1864 he designed the villa for the co-founder of the zoo, the wine merchant Georg Schultz , and in 1865 the Egestorff aquarium. When he came under public criticism in 1865 for his zoo buildings, he was supported by Alfred Brehm , who valued him for his romanticized castle and rock structures. As a result, he designed grotto-style aquariums for Cologne (1869) and Mühlhausen in addition to the Berlin aquarium Unter den Linden . In Berlin he also built the Hotel Minerva , which existed until 1916. He restored and built churches in the Goslar area.

After his death, Hare continued the work on the churches and at the Villa Glitter castle of Karl Wedekind continued.

Honors
