Wilhelm Otto von Wittich called von Hinzmann-Hallmann (born April 22, 1815 in Eisenach , † December 18, 1894 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 9th Hussar Regiment .

Life

origin

His parents were the Grand Ducal Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach Chancellor and senior consistorial director Gustav Wittich (* October 25, 1783 - September 21, 1857) and his wife Anna Maria, née Gau (* February 20, 1785; † October 29, 1842) whose fourth child was given the nickname Otto and, after his great-grandfather Wilhelm Wittich (1723–1786), a pharmacist from Gerstungen near Eisenach , also the nickname Wilhelm .

Career

Otto received his education at the grammar school in Eisenach . After graduating, he went on October 11, 1833 as a hussar in the 1st Leib-Hussar Regiment . There he was appointed portepeef ensign on May 11, 1836, and second lieutenant on August 25, 1837 . On 28 January 1845 he was in the Prussian nobility raised .

On June 22, 1852 Otto rose to Premier Lieutenant . From May 15, 1854 to October 1, 1855, he was assigned to the 1st Landwehr Hussar Regiment as a squadron leader . On December 4, 1856 he was promoted to Rittmeister , then from April 7, 1858 to May 1, 1859, he came as a leader in the 1st Squadron of the 1st Landwehr Hussar Regiment. After his return, Otto was transferred to the 1st Hussar Regiment on June 30, 1859 as squadron chief . Appointed major on June 25, 1864 , he joined the 10th Hussar Regiment on May 18, 1866 as a regular staff officer .

During the German War Otto fought in the skirmishes near Gitschin and Pressburg as well as the battle of Königgrätz . For this he received the Order of the Crown, 3rd Class with Swords, on September 20, 1866 .

Otto joined the 9th Hussar Regiment as a commander on January 14, 1868. There he was on 22 March 1868 Lieutenant Colonel and on July 26, 1870. Colonel promoted. During the Franco-Prussian War he fought at Spichern and Mars-La-Tour . At Gravelotte he acquired the Iron Cross 2nd class. He also fought at Amiens , the Hallue , Bapaume and St.Quentin and the siege of Metz . For this he received the Iron Cross 1st Class on January 6, 1871.

After the war, he was awarded the character of major general on January 10, 1874 and put up for disposal with a pension . He died on December 18, 1894 in Berlin as a Knight of Honor of the Order of St. John .

Wittich married Luise Elisabeth Wilhelmine Friederike Auguste Anna Dorothea Hinzmann von Hallmann on September 8, 1841 in Danzig (* May 3, 1821; † January 1, 1911). The couple had several children:
