Life

Wilhelm Schmidt was born in Altkalen in 1829 as the son of the theologian and prepositive Joachim Schmidt. Schmidt attended the cathedral school in Güstrow . After graduating from high school, he began to study law at the University of Leipzig . In 1849 he was reciprocated in the Corps Saxonia Leipzig . He moved to the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and in 1850 - like Heinrich Martins , Adolf Blomeyer , Albert Lücke and Rudolf Hammer  - also became active in the Corps Vandalia Heidelberg . He finished his studies at the home university of Rostock .

After completing his studies, he began to rise steadily in the ministries of the Schwerin state government. In 1859 he became Ministerialassessor in the Ministry of the Interior, 1864 Ministerialrat , 1884 Secret Ministerialrat and finally Ministerialdirektor in the Mecklenburg-Schwerin Ministry of the Interior. He made great contributions to the expansion of the railway system and the development of the ferry connection to Denmark. In 1887 he was head of the (Grand Ducal) Commission for the Preservation of Monuments. The description and inventory of the art and historical monuments of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in five volumes by Friedrich Schlie is largely due to his support. He was a member of the Association for Mecklenburg History and Archeology and the Scientific Association of Schwerin. On his 50th anniversary in service, he was honored with the title of Excellence in 1904 . Wilhelm Schmidt died in Schwerin in 1909 at the age of 80.

“Even in the closer circle of our history association, we were not spared significant losses in the last year of the association. I am thinking above all of Ministerial Director Wilhelm Schmidt. We all knew him, the man of the tireless work that he devoted a long life to his native country. For over 50 years, a truly rare case, he was a member of the Ministry of the Interior, first in an advisory position, then in a managerial position. He has [...] exercised a decisive influence on legislation and administration, and even imprinted his spirit on many new institutions. [...] "
