history
On the Danube, rafting - only downstream - was followed by towing, also upstream by people or draft animals on the Treppelweg. From 1881–1896, steam-powered chain ships passed the Danube here.
In 1908 the Venus von Willendorf was excavated during the construction work for the Danube Bank Railway. In 1909 the railway (Krems - St. Valentin) was opened and in 2010 it was essentially and completely shut down here.
From the mid-1980s, cycle tourism developed on the Danube Cycle Path .
On May 12, 2018, heavy rain that lasted 1 hour only caused local flooding of streets and cellars of houses in Willendorf and the neighboring municipality of Höflein. The Frauenbach had overflowed its banks. 19 fire brigades with 2 large pumps were in action.
economy
Today tourism, viticulture and fruit growing are important industries for the residents of the place.
