William Jacob Baer
William Jacob Baer (born January 29, 1860 in Cincinnati , † September 21, 1941 in East Orange ) was an American miniature , genre and portrait painter .
Life
From 1876 to 1879 William Baer learned the profession of lithographer in Cincinnati . In addition, he attended the evening course of the sculptor Louis Rebisso at the McMicken School of Design (today: Art Academy of Cincinnati ) and practiced modeling. From 1880 to 1884 he studied painting under Ludwig von Löfftz at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich .
William Baer returned to the United States and worked in the Montclair artists' colony as a genre and portrait painter. He trained illustrators in the subjects of artistic printmaking and black and white drawing . His friend Alexander Drake, editor of Scribner’s Monthly magazine , had encouraged him to do such teaching . From 1888, Baer led Chautauqua -like summer courses in painting in Round Lake / Saratoga County . From 1893 he continued these events for several years in Chautauqua .
Baer began in 1892, encouraged by Alfred Corning Clark (1844–1896), with miniature painting and later rose to the position of President of the New York American Society of Miniature Painters (ASMP).
William Baer exhibited at the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 , the 1900 World's Fair , the Art Institute of Chicago , the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the National Academy Museum and School .
In 1913, Baer was elected an Associate Fellow of the National Academy Museum and School .
