Willem Jan "Wim" Meutstege (born July 28, 1952 in Lochem ) is a Dutch former football player . He was active for Excelsior and Sparta from Rotterdam and for the AFC Ajax from Amsterdam in the Eredivisie and was used once in the national team .
Club career
Meutstege played as a teenager for his home club Sportclub Lochem and until he was 19 years old for the Go Ahead Eagles , where he was last used in the second team. In 1971 he began training at the Rotterdam Sports University Academie voor Lichamelijke Opvoeding and switched to Excelsior Rotterdam as a professional . There the right defender made 35 games in his first season. His first goal in the Eredivisie he scored in the following season on August 20, 1972. The only goal of the game, a header goal over Pim Doesburg , Excelsior won for the first time in its history at local rivals Sparta. When Excelsior had to relegate at the end of the season, Meutstege received a contract with the Spartans. He stayed with the traditional club for five years before following his coach Cor Brom to Ajax Amsterdam in 1978 . Here signed "het professortje" for three years. "The little professor" he was called because of his hard, soulful way of playing. He himself later described her: “Pedaling wasn't my thing. I've always had respect for other people - including my opponents. I had to assert myself with my speed and my overview ... I outplayed the opponent, took the ball from him and matched it to my teammates. The fans didn't come to the stadium because of me. But that made me pretty valuable to the team. "
At Ajax, Leo Beenhakker took over as coach in 1979, who relied on tough guys in defense, for example in the first leg of the 1980 European Cup semi-finals at Nottingham Forest , where the powerful offensive forces Francis , Birtles and Robertson had to be kept in check. Piet Wijnberg was preferred to Meutstege; Ajax still lost 2-0. In the second leg Meutstege returned to the team, but had to be replaced after a knee injury. Although the 28-year-old still hoped in September 1980 that he would be able to play again after the winter break, this injury put the end of his football career after 272 games with nine goals in the Eredivisie.

National team
Thanks to his good performances in the honor division, Meutstege was appointed to the junior national team for the first time in 1974 . With Jong Oranje he played at the Junior European Championship in 1976 , where he attracted the attention of bond coach George Knobel . Knobel invited him to the training camp of the A team , which was preparing for the European Championship finals in Yugoslavia in Zeist . Meutstege was supposed to be part of the European Championship squad, but was unable to fly with the team due to an upcoming examination at the sports college and stayed in the Netherlands as a stand-by player.
After losing the semi-final against Czechoslovakia , however, some players were suspended or injured, so neither Johan Cruyff nor Johan Neeskens or Wim van Hanegem could play. Knobel had Meutstege and Kees Kist come to Zagreb . In the game for third place against the hosts on June 19, 1976, he was substituted on after half-time for Wim Jansen . He was then one of the “bench presses” of the Oranje Elftal six times , but was not used again. The 3-2 win in the “small final” in Zagreb was Wim Meutstege's only international match.
After the active time
After the end of his playing career, Meutstege worked as a sports teacher, PR manager at a sporting goods manufacturer, member of the editorial board of a television program, manager of a swimming pool and in the management of the sports center at the University of Amsterdam . Since 1990 he has been employed by the Hague City Council. He later worked as an archivist at the Dutch embassy in Georgia for three and a half years . After his return to the Netherlands he worked for the Dutch Foreign Ministry; in February 2009 he worked in the embassy in Sudan . He was also temporarily the coach of the Excelsior Rotterdam second team.

Individual evidence
”Quoted from Eén keer in Oranje: Wim Meutstege ( Memento from February 5, 2009 in the Internet Archive ), OnsOranje website of the KNVB from February 4 2009, viewed October 23, 2009
