history
First mention
For a long time, the first known mention of Wittershausen was taken to be 1317, as noted by the Wittershausen village school teacher T. Weimer in his "Local History Collection" in 1960. At that time Wittershausen belonged to the parish of Euerdorf , from 1668 to Aura an der Saale , today to Oberthulba.
According to the fief books of the Würzburg Monastery published by Würzburg archivist Hermann Hofmann in 1972, however, the first mention dates back to 1303/1304. As a result, Wittershausen is already mentioned in the fief book prepared for the Würzburg bishop Andreas von Gundelfingen (fief books were newly made for each bishop). The place name is derived from the place founder Witrich (written: Uuitrich or Uuitrih, from Witurich), who was mentioned several times in deed of donation from the 9th century as a witness for the respective donation and possibly came from the Saale valley or the Thulba valley.
Middle Ages and Modern Times
In the 14th century, the original building of today's St. George's Church was built . Under the Würzburg prince-bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn, this church building was supplemented by a church tower in the post-Gothic style in 1612 .
In 1796 the place fell victim to a serious cattle epidemic, which was the reason for a pilgrimage to the Sulzthaler Heilig-Kreuz-Chapel . In the years 1816/17 a bad harvest resulted in a great famine, which had to be alleviated by deliveries of grain from Würzburg .
The town's schoolhouse was built in 1854 and was rebuilt and renovated several times - most recently from 2016 to 2017.
Twentieth century
With the construction of a new nave by the Würzburg cathedral master builder Hans Skull in 1957/58, St. George's Church was created in its current form. In 1967 the morgue of the local cemetery was built, which was also remodeled in the same year.
Land consolidation took place in Wittershausen from 1967 to 1980 .
On July 1, 1971, Wittershausen was incorporated into Oberthulba as part of the municipal reform.
