Life

Gorbunow came from a farming family. He attended the Sarayisk secondary school and was then sent from the Komsomol to Leningrad to the military engineering school of the Red Air Fleet . After his training he was a flight instructor at the 2nd Military Pilot School of the Red Air Fleet in Borisoglebsk . He then studied at the Moscow State Aviation Institute (MAI), graduating in 1931.

After graduation, Gorbunov worked in Andrei Tupolev's design office. There he was involved in the creation of the technical drawings for the Tupolev TB-3 , Tupolew R-6 and Tupolew SB-2 and their introduction into series production. He projected along with Viktor Bolchowitinow the bolkhovitinov db-a .

In 1937 Gorbunov became head of the aircraft department of the 1st main administration of the People's Commissariat for the Defense Industry of the USSR . After the founding of the People's Commissariat for the Aviation Industry (NKAP), he became head of Department 4 of the 1st headquarters there in January 1939. End of April 1939, he struck with his staff Semyon Lavochkin and Mikhail Gudkov the construction of aircraft using the new laminated densified wood - composite delta Drewessina ago. The end of May 1939, on assembly of the NKAP based on the factory no. 301 in Khimki the design office experimental OKB-301 organized under the collective management of Gorbunow, Lavochkin and Gudkov. On July 15, 1939, by order of the NKAP, Gorbunov became chief of OKB-301. On August 29, 1939, Resolution No. 243 of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR was passed for the construction of two all-wood I-301 fighters . On September 1, 1939 Gorbunow was ordered by order no. 249 of the NKAP work manager for the I-301, the later LaGG-3 . The development was carried out by Gorbunov, Lavochkin, Gudkow, JB Struzel, Semyon Alexeev and others. On October 10, 1940, the NKAP ordered the serial production of the LaGG-3. Gorbunov led the work until December 14, 1940, when Gudkow was appointed head of OKB-301 by the NKAP.

Gorbunov was then sent to Factory No. 31 in Taganrog to organize the accelerated LaGG-3 production as the main designer and chief of the OKB-31. On July 3, 1941, OKB-31 became the serial production design office SKB-31. As a result of the German-Soviet War , Factory No. 31 and the SKB-31 with Gorbunow were evacuated to Tbilisi in October 1941 . The project of the light bomber Pb-301 started by Gorbunow in Khimki was abandoned because of the war. After mass production of the Petlyakov Pe-2 began , Gorbunov was no longer involved in this project. He also developed a "soft" fuel tank for aircraft, the design of which is still used in aircraft construction.

In 1944 the LaGG-3 production was stopped. The KB-31, headed by Gorbunow, was relocated from Tbilisi to the seaplane test factory No. 458 in Ivankowo (since 1960 united with Dubna on the Ivankowo reservoir) to develop an aircraft with a jet engine .

While on vacation, Gorbunow went on a motorboat on Sunday, July 29, 1945 on the Ivankowoer reservoir. In a sudden violent maneuver, he fell overboard and drowned . Gorbunov's urn was buried in the columbarium of the Donskoy cemetery .

Gorbunov's older brother, Sergei Gorbunov, was the director of Aircraft Plant No. 22 in Fili .
