action

Thomas has not lived with his parents in Dessau for a long time, he lives hundreds of kilometers away in West Germany and hardly sees his sister Susanne any more. His mother takes care of his father Michael, a retired architect who can no longer be without support after a stroke, in the house he designed and built. She carries him up and down the stairs, his father's physical signs of deterioration worsen over time. Installing a stairlift is out of the question for the architect in his own home.

Thomas is just about to start a family when he receives an urgent call: His mother would not be fine, he should please come to his parents' house as quickly as possible. Thomas can't get there in time, and when he arrives, his mother has already died of a heart attack. Apparently the physical exertion of home care had become too much for her. Now the funeral has to be organized and there is little time left for common mourning work.

His father, Michael, is not naturally incapable of running the household on his own, but he refuses to go to an old people's home. Thomas and Susanne are now faced with the question of who should look after the father. At first, Thomas secretly hopes that his sister will give up her own life and devote herself to caring for their father. If she doesn't want that, who should take care of the care and, above all, who should pay for it? Tormenting questions that neither of them can answer at first. They both realize that in the past they hushed up important things that affect the future of their parents and are now confronted with them in a painful way.
