Wolf D. Prix

Wolf Dieter Prix (born December 13, 1942 in Vienna ) is an Austrian architect . In 1968 he co-founded the architects' cooperative Coop Himmelb (l) au , which enjoys an international reputation as an important representative of deconstructivism .

Career

Prix ​​studied at the Vienna University of Technology , the Architectural Association in London and the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles .

In 1968 he founded the Viennese architects Coop Himmelb (l) au together with Helmut Swiczinsky and Michael Holzer. Since Holzer (1971) and Swiczinsky (2001) left the company, Prix has been the only remaining founding partner of the office, which he currently heads as Design Principal and CEO .

In 2006, he was commissioner of the Austrian Pavilion at the 10th Architecture Biennale of Venice .

Teaching

He taught as visiting professor in 1984 at the Architectural Association in London and in 1990 at Harvard University in Cambridge , Massachusetts. From 1985 to 1995 Wolf D. Prix was Adjunct Professor at the SCI-Arc in Los Angeles. In 1993 he was appointed full professor for architectural design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna ; From 2003 to 2012 he was a director at the Institute for Architecture, head of the Studio Prix and vice-rector of the university. He has been a faculty member at Columbia University in New York since 1998 . At the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) he took over the Harvey S. Perloff Chair in 1999 and a visiting professorship in 2001.

Memberships

From 1995 to 1997, Prix was a member of the architecture advisory board at the Austrian Federal Ministry for Science and Research. He is a member of the Austrian Art Senate, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Advisory Board for Building Culture. He also belongs to the Chamber of Architects of Austria at the Chamber of Architects and Santa Clara in Cuba , the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Chamber of Architects of Italy. He is an honorary member of the Association of German Architects BDA .

Awards

Wolf Prix has received numerous awards, including the City of Vienna Prize for Architecture in 1988 , the New York Progressive Architecture Award three times in 1989–91 and the Grand Austrian State Prize for Architecture in 1999 . In 2001 he received an honorary doctorate from the Universidad de Palermo in Buenos Aires , and in 2002 the Gold Medal for Services to the State of Vienna . In 2002 he became an officer of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres . In 2004 he received the Annie Spink Award for Excellence in Architectural Education for his commitment to education and teaching, in 2008 the Jencks Award for his special contribution to architecture in theory and practice. In May 2009, Federal President Heinz Fischer awarded him the Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art in recognition of his outstanding creative achievements. In 2011 he was made an honorary citizen of the South Korean city of Busan . In 2013, Prix received the Hessian Culture Prize .
