Wolfgang Altgeld

Wolfgang Altgeld (born February 8, 1951 in Homberg ) is a German modern historian and was a professor at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg until 2013 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1970, he began studying history , political science and education at the University of Cologne , where he became a research assistant in 1976 . In 1979 he became a research assistant at the chair for modern history at the University of Passau , which Rudolf Lill held from 1979 to 1983 . After completing his doctorate in 1982 on the Germans' image of Italy between the Enlightenment and the German Revolution of 1848/1849 , he became a university assistant at the Institute for History at the University of Karlsruhe in 1984 .

After his habilitation in 1990, he became a lecturer in modern history at the University of Karlsruhe in 1991 , before he was given a C3 professorship at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg in 1992 . In 1996, he accepted the call to a C3 professorship at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and was also temporarily acting head of the Institute for History at the University of Karlsruhe.

From May 1, 2000, Wolfgang Altgeld was the successor to Harm-Hinrich Brandt, professor and holder of the chair for modern history at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg. As such, he dealt with the development of nationalism in the German-speaking area from the 18th to the 20th century, the history of German resistance from 1933 to 1945 , the history of Christianity and the history of Italy . He retired in 2013. His successor on the chair is the media historian Peter Hoeres .
