Wolfgang Eichhorn (born February 23, 1930 in Unterneubrunn ) is a German Marxist philosopher .

Life

Wolfgang Eichhorn was born in Unterneubrunn, today at Schonbrunn, in the municipality of Schleusegrund in Hildburghausen in Thuringia belongs. Here he attended a primary school from 1936, switched to the advanced school in Hildburghausen in 1942 and passed the Abitur there in 1948 . Immediately afterwards, he began studying at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Friedrich Schiller University (FSU) in Jena . He mainly devoted himself to philosophy and philosophical methodology , but also to political economy and modern logic . Eichhorn completed his studies in 1951 with a diploma thesis on philosophical-theoretical approaches to political views and with participation in a state lecturer course including an examination.

In the fall semester of 1951, Eichhorn began teaching as a lecturer for the basics of Marxism-Leninism at the Humboldt University in Berlin (HUB). In 1954 he joined the HUB, where he besides the philosophical teaching the possibility of the Institute of Philosophy doctoral postgraduate used. In 1956 he received his doctorate there with the dissertation on the law of dialectical contradiction and some questions of his work in the transition period from capitalism to socialism in the German Democratic Republic . After that, he continued to research, publish and teach on questions of the materialistic conception of history and ethics . This also resulted in the work on people in the socialist era , with which he completed his habilitation in 1964 . From 1957 to 1964 he was head of the historical materialism department at the Institute of Philosophy. At the same time, he was honorary, later deputy editor-in-chief of the German magazine for philosophy from 1960 . From 1960 he was also editor of the Scientific Weltanschauung series .

In 1965 Eichhorn became an employee of the Institute for Philosophy at the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin (DAW). In 1966 he was appointed professor of philosophy at the DAW. From 1968 to 1970 he was in charge of the social sciences research department at the DAW Presidium.

In 1969 Eichhorn was elected as a corresponding member of the learned society of the DAW and in 1973 as a full member of the AdW. In 1970 the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the GDR selected him as a member.

In 1990 he took early retirement. Eichhorn is a founding member of the Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin and was the first secretary of the presidium and the first treasurer. Eichhorn is a member of the Marx-Engels-Foundation .

Eichhorn lives in Berlin. He is married for the second time and has one son and two daughters.

In the GDR, Eichhorn was known as Wolfgang Eichhorn I because there was a professor of philosophy of the same name, Wolfgang Eichhorn II, who was one year younger and who was director of the Marxist-Leninist philosophy section at Humboldt University.
