Wolfgang Lorenz (philosopher)

John Wolfgang Lorenz (born August 16, 1931 in Annaberg ) is a German Marxist philosopher . He was a professor of Marxism-Leninism at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig and is a local researcher from the Ore Mountains .

Life

Lorenz attended elementary school in his hometown of Annaberg from 1938 to 1946. From 1946 to 1949 he completed an apprenticeship as a machine fitter at VEB IKA (installation, cables and apparatus) Annaberg, where he then worked for a year. In 1950 he became active school director at the Annaberg vocational school, and in 1951 he was assistant editor in the Annaberg district editorial office of the daily newspaper “Volksstimme” Karl-Marx-Stadt .

He passed his Abitur in 1956 after three years of study at the workers and farmers faculty in Leipzig . From 1956 to 1960 studied Lorenz at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig philosophy . He then worked as a research assistant in the Marxism-Leninism department of the Faculty of Economics until 1965 and then until 1969 as senior research assistant in his department at Leipzig University, which was now part of the Philological Faculty. He received his doctorate in 1966 with the thesis " On some questions of the connection between language and society - a critical examination of Leo Weisgerber " at the University of Leipzig for Dr. phil. From 1969 to 1972 he was a lecturer for dialectical and historical materialism at the University of Leipzig and from 1972 to 1975 at the Bergakademie Freiberg . In 1975 he presented his dissertation on the subject of " On the relationship between image and meaning: considerations in the boundary field between epistemology and semantics " in a joint work with Gerd Wotjak at the University of Leipzig , with which he obtained the degree of Dr. sc. phil. attained. In 1977 he was appointed full professor for dialectical and historical materialism. From 1977 to 1979 Lorenz was deputy director for education and training and from 1981 to 1983 deputy director for research in the Marxism-Leninism section of the Karl Marx University. In 1979/80 he was visiting professor at the Ecole Superieure du Parti Congolais du Travail in Brazzaville (Congo) and in 1988 at the People's University of Beijing . From 1986 to 1989 he was a member of the Scientific Council of Karl Marx University.

After the decision was made after the fall of the Wall in 1990 that all institutes for Marxism-Leninism should be dissolved , he was initially given a teaching position for genealogy and heraldry at the Cultural and Art Studies Section of the Karl Marx University in Leipzig in 1990/91. In October 1991, Lorenz was given early retirement. Since then he has been working as a freelance publicist. He has been in retirement since 1995. He has lived in Annaberg-Buchholz again with his wife since 1991.

The local history researcher Erich Lorenz was his uncle.

Local history

As a local researcher and genealogist , Lorenz has specialized in the Ore Mountains area around Annaberg-Buchholz. Particular attention is paid to a source-critical Adam Ries research and the Annaberg town history in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Lorenz is an active member of various genealogical associations. 1989-1990 he was chairman of the working group Genealogy Leipzig and is now an honorary member of the products resulting from Leipzig Genealogical Society On October 3, 1991, he co-founded the Adam Ries Federal Annaberg-Buchholz and to 2008 deputy chairman of the association, in the same year he was made an honorary member of the association.

From 1983 to 1986 he was editor of the booklet "Genealogy as Historical Sociology". He is co-editor of the series of publications "Sources for Local and Family History of the Ore Mountains" and "Ore Mountains Genealogies" of the Adam Ries Association and was editor of the genealogical journal "Family and History" until 2009.
