Janko Russew (born December 1, 1958 in Iwanski (Bulgaria) , Shumen Oblast , Bulgaria ) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter .
Career
Russew dominated the lightweight up to 67.5 kg and the middleweight up to 75 kg during his career. He competed in his first international competition at the 1977 World Championships in Stuttgart in the class up to 60 kg and came second with 277.5 kg.
For the 1978 World Cup in Gettysburg , Russew already switched to the lightweight up to 67.5 kg and won his first of five world championship titles. The following year he was able to defend his title in Thessaloniki and achieved first place with 332.5 kg in front of Joachim Kunz with 325.0 kg.
At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , which also represented the world championships for that year, Russew won Olympic gold with 342.5 kg again before Kunz with 335.0 kg. Russew lifted a world record in pushing with 195.0 kg.
In 1981 Russew switched to the middleweight division up to 75 kg and was able to win his fourth world championship right away. He achieved 360 kg in a duel, placing himself in front of the Soviet athlete Alexander Perwi . In 1982 he defended his title again with 365.0 kg in front of his compatriot Mintscho Paschow .
Russew contested his last world championship in 1983 in the lightweight up to 67.5 kg and finished second behind Joachim Kunz and in front of Andreas Behm with 337.5 kg .

- Russew set 28 world records in feather, light and middleweight during his playing days.
- After his career as a weightlifter, Russew worked as a trainer. Among other things, he looked after Slatan Wanew .
