Yıldızeli is a city and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Central Anatolian province of Sivas . The place is about 50 km by road (air line: 38 km) west-northwest of the provincial capital Sivas. Both cities are connected by a railway line and the D200 ( E 88 ) trunk road .
Before 1936 the place was called Yenihan (German: New Building). Armenians and Kurds use the name Norhan, which has the same meaning. The place was named after the Yıldız Mountain in the north of the city. According to the city seal, the place received the status of a municipality ( Belediye ) in 1875 .
The district of Yıldızeli is located in the west of the province and borders the central district in the east and south-east and the Şarkışla district in the south-west. External borders are formed by the provinces of Yozgat in the west and Tokat in the north.
In addition to the district town, the district consists of another municipality ( Belediye ) (Güneykaya 1,912 inhabitants) and 118 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 210 inhabitants. Sarıyar (1,596), Kalın (904), Kavak (833) and Kümbet (825 inh .) Are the largest villages. 37 villages have 210 or more inhabitants (= average). The population density is below the provincial value, the urban population is 27.23 percent.
