Yunzhou ( Chinese  雲 州 區  /  云 州 区 , Pinyin Yúnzhōu Qū ) is a district of the prefecture -level city of Datong in the north of the Chinese province of Shanxi . It has an area of ​​1797 square kilometers and in 2018 had a population of 175,695 people.

Yunzhou administers a territory with an east-west extension of 45 kilometers and a north-south extension of 60 kilometers and a total of 1,497 square kilometers. It is bordered by Hunyuan County and the urban district of Huairen to the south, Pingcheng and Yungang Districts to the west , Xinrong District to the north, and Yanggao County to the east . The district mainly includes rural areas of the Datong Basin north of the Great Wall of China and the Yanmenguan Pass . It is located on the traffic routes between the actual city of Datong in the west and the metropolitan area Beijing - Tianjin in the east.

Yunzhou has a temperate continental climate with an average annual temperature between 6.4 ° C and 6.7 ° C, with temperature extremes of -31.9 ° C on January 25, 2000 and 39.9 ° C on July 29, 2010 lie. The annual precipitation averages 387 millimeters, with extremes in 1995 (567 millimeters) and 2001 (253 millimeters). There are an annual average of 79 rainy days, 34 storm days, 2975 hours of sunshine and 125 to 148 frost-free days. Drought, hail, storms, ice and heavy rain are among the meteorological threats to Yunzhou's agriculture.

The relief of Yunzhou is 55% flat, 30% hilly and 15% mountainous. Yunzhou is located in the catchment area of ​​the Hai He River , the main waters that flow through Yunzhou are the Sanggan He , the Yu He , Sha He and Fangcheng He . There are 16 reservoirs with a total area of ​​842 hectares. The largest of these is the Cetian Reservoir , with 86 million cubic meters of storage volume, it is the second largest reservoir in Shanxi Province and supplies the city of Beijing with 230 million cubic meters of water annually.

In 2018, Yunzhou had a population of 175,695 people, of which 49,293 people were urban and 126,402 people were rural. The population consisted of 90,747 men and 84,948 women.

Administrative structure

The Yunzhou District was created on February 9, 2018 as part of a regional reform from large parts of the then Datong District . At the community level, it consists of three large communities , seven communities and three street districts . These are:

Yunzhou has 43,000 hectares of arable land, 8,000 hectares of which are irrigated and almost 200 hectares are suitable for growing vegetables. About 56,000 hectares are forested, about 24,000 hectares are suitable as pastureland.

One of the specialties of Yunzhou's agriculture is the cultivation of Hemerocallis citrina , which is eaten in northern China as a vegetable under the name yellow flower (黄花) or golden needle (金针菜). The cultivation of these relatively high-quality vegetables is promoted in order to be able to fight poverty among the farmers of Yunzhou more effectively. In addition, a special variety of green beans and apricots are among the most profitable agricultural products in Yunzhou.

Yunzhou has deposits of coal , basalt , volcanic stone , limestone , granite , quartz , feldspar , mineral water, sand and iron ore . The most important branches of industry are the production of activated carbon and cement .

Culture

The main attractions of Yunzhou include the Datong Volcanic Group , the Xiping Desert Park, the wetlands on the Sanggan He River , the Haotian Temple , the residence of the Lü clans, the ancient home of Li Dianlin and the site of the Battle of Baideng .
