The remaining third is taken up by the Daton Basin. The most important rivers are Yu He , Kouquan He , Shili He and Gan He , which all flow into the Sanggan He and belong to the catchment area of the Yongding He .

Yungang has a relatively dry climate with four clearly distinguishable seasons. Winters are relatively long and dry, summers short, hot and with the most rainfall. Part of the coal extracted is converted into electricity directly in Yungang in thermal power plants; in 2018, power plant capacities totaling 4.82 gigawatts were in operation.

The urban area of Yungang is approximately 30 kilometers from Datong-Yungang Airport . Yungang lies on the railway line Datong Puzhou , the railway Beijing-Baotou and the railway Daqin , which are particularly important in coal transportation. In 2015, the construction of the Datong-Zhangjiakou high-speed line began, which should reduce the travel time to Beijing to 2 hours.

Several major roads cross the Yungang area, including the Eren Hot-Guangzhou Highway , National Roads 109 and 208 .
