Zalman King (actually Zalman King Lefkowitz ; born May 23, 1942 in Trenton , New Jersey , † February 3, 2012 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film producer , screenwriter , director and actor .

life and work

After studying anthropology at Grinnell College , Iowa , King worked as a professional diver . In the 1960s, he moved to Southern California with his wife, Patricia Louisianna Knop , whom he married in 1963. King's acting career began in the mid-1960s.

From 1969 to 1971 he starred alongside Judy Pace and Lee J. Cobb in the television series The Young Lawyers , for which he received a Golden Globe nomination in 1971 . In addition, he had guest roles in the series Smoking Colts , Daniel Boone , The Munsters , Bonanza , Solo for ONCEL , Der Boss , FBI , Die Macht des Geldes , Planet der Gianten , Der Marshall von Cimarron and Alfred Hitchcock .

In the 1970s, he appeared in a number of motion pictures, including The Ski Bum , Duel to Die , Blue Sunshine and The Passover Plot . In 1979 he wrote the story for the film Roadie and was also an executive producer here. Alan Rudolph directed and Meat Loaf played the lead. In 1981 he starred in the film Planet des Schrecken , produced by Roger Corman , and in 1982 he produced the Alan Rudolph film Death from Nowhere .

In 1986, together with his wife Patricia Louisianna Knop, Sarah Kernochan and Elizabeth McNeill, he wrote the screenplay for the Adrian Lyne film 9½ weeks , in which Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke play the leading roles.

In the following years, King made a name for himself as a director of adult films , of which Two Moon Junction , Delta of Venus and Wild Orchid were the most successful. In the early to mid-1990s, King made the television series Red Shoe Diaries . From 2008 to 2010, King directed the television series Body Language .

In 2011, King began filming his final film, Pleasure or Pain , which was completed after his death and released in October 2012. He died of cancer on February 3, 2012. King's first daughter, Gillian Lefkowitz, is a camerawoman and artist , and his second daughter, Chloe King, is a screenwriter and producer.
