Journal of Phonetics, Linguistics and Communication Research

The Journal for Phonetics, Linguistics and Communication Research (ZPSK) was founded in April 1947 in the form of the previous edition of the Journal for Phonetics and General Linguistics . This made it the first specialist journal for language research published in the former Soviet occupation zone .

From 1961 until 1993 it was held with the first title. As a publisher, the ZPSK was tied to the Akademie-Verlag .

It was Hans Kaesser , one of the directors of the Akademie-Verlag, who led the negotiations with Diedrich Westermann to found the magazine in 1947 and appointed him as the first editor . The first issues included six publications by German and foreign authors each year. In the years from 1961 to 1963 four issues were published and from 1964 to 1992 again six issues per year. The editors in 1961 were Karl Ammer ( Halle ), Otto von Essen ( Hamburg ), Ursula Feyer ( Wiesbaden ), Fritz Hintze ( Berlin ), Georg Friedrich Meier ( Leipzig / Berlin). In addition to German , the languages of publication were English , French and Russian .

One of the most important editors-in-chief of the ZPSK was the linguist Georg Friedrich Meier from 1961 to 1983 . He succeeded in winning a large number of internationally renowned linguists for the editorial committee, such as Eugenio Coseriu ( Tübingen ), Otto von Essen (Hamburg), Vladimir Georgiev ( Sofia ), Alexandru Graur ( Bucharest ), Peter Hartmann ( Konstanz ), Ján Horecký ( Bratislava ), André Martinet ( Sceaux ), Fedot P. Filin ( Moscow ), Roman Jakobson ( Cambridge / Massachusetts ), Eugenius Marius Uhlenbeck ( Leiden ).

The magazine deals with issues of language and communication . So with physiological and acoustic, descriptive and historical phonetics , phonology , but also general, descriptive and historical grammar , lexicons and stylistics , the theory of language, the psychology and pathology of language, applied and mathematical linguistics and with Information theory problems that touch the questions of language theory.

Since 1993 the ZPSK has been published under the new name Language Typology and Universals (STUF ) by Verlag Walter de Gruyter Berlin , New York .
