The Journal for Phonetics, Linguistics and Communication Research (ZPSK) was founded in April 1947 in the form of the previous edition of the Journal for Phonetics and General Linguistics . This made it the first specialist journal for language research published in the former Soviet occupation zone .

From 1961 until 1993 it was held with the first title. As a publisher, the ZPSK was tied to the Akademie-Verlag .

It was Hans Kaesser , one of the directors of the Akademie-Verlag, who led the negotiations with Diedrich Westermann to found the magazine in 1947 and appointed him as the first editor . The first issues included six publications by German and foreign authors each year. In the years from 1961 to 1963 four issues were published and from 1964 to 1992 again six issues per year. The editors in 1961 were Karl Ammer ( Halle ), Otto von Essen ( Hamburg ), Ursula Feyer ( Wiesbaden ), Fritz Hintze ( Berlin ), Georg Friedrich Meier ( Leipzig / Berlin). One of the most important editors-in-chief of the ZPSK was the linguist Georg Friedrich Meier from 1961 to 1983 .
