Zella Day Kerr (born March 13, 1995 ), known as Zella Day , is an American singer and songwriter from Pinetop-Lakeside, Arizona , United States.

Day's mother, Ana Kerr, ran a arts and crafts studio called Art Smarts, which shared one wall with a coffee shop, Mor Mor Coffee, run by Day's maternal grandmother. Kerr noticed her daughter's affinity for music early on - as a toddler she could sing parts of Disney songs by heart - and at the age of nine her grandmother bought her a guitar.

Day began recording music at a young age and released her debut album Powered by Love in 2009 . After his success, Day worked as a songwriter for the BMG Publishing Group and eventually landed a Hollywood Records artist deal. In 2015, Day released her major label debut Kicker , which was preceded by the singles Hypnotic and East of Eden . This was followed by advertising appearances for publications such as Vogue , Playboy and The Huffington Post as well as appearances on television programs such as Late Night with Seth Meyers and the talk show Conan . In 2016, Day performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival .

Career

Family and personal life

Growing up in Arizona, Day immersed herself in the cafe and art space her parents created in their small mountain village of Pinetop. She was initially encouraged by her mother to learn guitar as a practical tool for a sustainable career as a musician. Her first songs, written shortly after playing the guitar at the age of nine, were influenced by her parents' classic singer / songwriter records.

The self-released album was recorded and paid for by a family member friend who was impressed with the songwriting and self-determination of the 14-year-old Day. The album artwork designers provided their services for free and just wanted to be part of the project.

Then Huff set up co-writing sessions with fellow artists like John Paul White of The Civil Wars and eighteen-year-old Meghan Trainor for Day .
