The Fankel barrage is a barrage on the Moselle near Bruttig-Fankel . It is equipped with a sector weir , a lock for large motor cargo ships , a boat lock , a hydroelectric power station and a fish ladder . The barrage was completed in 1964 as part of the Moselle canalization . Next to the barrage is the central control room Fankel of RWE Power AG, from which all barrages and hydropower plants along the Moselle and Saar are controlled.

Central control room Fankel

The central control room of RWE Power AG , which is located directly next to the Fankel barrage on the western bank of the Moselle near the town of Ellenz , has the task of monitoring all hydropower plants along the Moselle and Saar. The congestion level is regulated fully automatically.

The performance is determined by the amount of water and the height of fall . With a water volume of 400 m³ / s, the Kaplan turbines of the individual hydropower plants can generate their maximum possible electrical output. If the amount of water is higher, the water level is regulated by draining water through the weirs . Floods lead to the shutdown of the hydropower plants, as the necessary gradient is lost.

The ten German Moselle hydropower plants are operated by RWE Innogy GmbH and have a total output of 180 megawatts . The total annual German output is 800 million kWh , enough energy for 250,000 households. Because of the smaller amount of water, the Luxembourg and French hydropower plants have a lower output. These power plants are operated by Société électrique de l'Our , in which the German RWE and the State of Luxembourg each hold 40.3%. All 17 hydropower plants along the Moselle have a total output of 209 megawatts.

The building also houses the Moselle water investigation station Fankel for water monitoring of the Moselle and Saar. To monitor the water quality and implement the EU Water Framework Directive, this is also a sampling point for the measurement program of the International Commission for the Protection of the Moselle and Saar ( IKSMS ).

Technical specifications

Barrage

The barrage is at Moselle kilometer 59.38 at a height of 86.20 m above sea level . The height of fall at the sector weir at mean water is 7.00 m.

lock

There are two lock chambers in the barrage. The main lock can be used by large motor cargo ships up to a length of 135 m and push convoys up to a length of 172.10 m and a width of 11.60 m. There is also a smaller lock for pleasure craft .

From 2006 to 2011, the lock was expanded to include a second chamber for large motor cargo ships with a size of 210 m x 12.5 m. The construction costs amounted to around 45 million euros. Since the transport volume on the Moselle is constantly increasing, there are considerable waiting times in front of the locks. Therefore, the construction of a second lock chamber along the German Moselle is planned for the individual barrages. Construction of another lock in Zeltingen began in 2003 . The chamber sizes reflect the trend towards larger ships and are longer than the existing locks.

Hydroelectric power plant

The run-of-river power plant with four bulb turbines , which went into operation in 1965, can generate up to 16.4 megawatts of electrical power with a water volume of 400 m³ / s . This generates 75 million kWh of electricity annually , enough for 20,000 households. The hydropower plant is controlled from the central control room of RWE Power AG , which is located next to this barrage. The hydropower plant underwent a general overhaul in 2001.
