As Zone d'études et d'aménagement du territoire ( ZEAT , " Space Research - and planning areas ") are referred to the eight zones in the Metropolitan France is divided for statistical purposes. Until December 2015, they each comprised one or more of the 21 regions and Corsica. Since the regions were redesigned in January 2016, some of the now 13 regions have been distributed over several ZEATs.
ZEAT was established in 1967 by the Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques ( INSEE ), together with the Commissariat général and the Délégation à l'aménagement du territoire et à l'action régionale (DATAR).
The NUTS 1 areas of the European Union are congruent with the ZEAT . However, they partially differ in coding and naming, and a ninth NUTS 1 area has been defined for the overseas departments .
