Future at Ostkreuz: Entrance area in Laskerstraße - Walpurgis Night 2014

The Zukunft am Ostkreuz (spelling: ZUKUNFT am Ostkreuz) is an art and cultural center in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain , south of Berlin Ostkreuz train station in Laskerstraße and parallel to Markgrafendamm.

The spacious venue , which is surrounded by a large garden, offers a very diverse audience - from alternative to middle-class - a wide-ranging program in all areas of Berlin's cultural life.

The Future House includes the Future Cinema , the Pompeji open-air cinema , the Future Theater , the Bildersaal Future exhibition room , the TIEF (formerly Tiefgrund) music clubs and garage , the forest garden with a small open-air stage and a pub with a beer garden .

The house also has its own microbrewery , the Brewery Future .

The diverse cultural activities in the future will be operated by a larger collective and numerous co-organizers. The Tilsiter Lichtspiele , also based in Friedrichshain, are responsible for the program in both cinemas . The future is not publicly funded, unlike most cultural institutions.

history

Open-air cinema Pompeii: outdoor area in Laskerstraße

The long thoroughfare, named after the Jewish lawyer and politician Eduard Lasker, which runs parallel to the railway line to Markgrafendamm, was severely affected by the destruction caused by bombs in World War II and the Battle of Berlin . After the reconstruction, only a part of the fuselage remained, so that Laskerstrasse is only 140 meters long today.

On the site of today's future at Ostkreuz in the GDR there was a large film warehouse of the Progress Film Distribution , in which the copies of the DEFA films were kept. After the fall of the Wall , the film warehouse existed for a few years until it moved to Berlin-Adlershof .

After that, the property stood empty until the Techno Club Ministry for Relaxation , MfE for short , was opened on March 23, 2003 . Its popularity was so great that visitors to the future are still asking about the MfE today . The club activities came to a surprising end when on September 30, 2009 at around 7:38 p.m. the fire alarm was given to the Berlin fire department . Part of the roof collapsed in a major fire lasting several hours that tied 130 fire brigade forces.

At the end of 2010, a co-operator of the Tilsiter Lichtspiele became aware of the now neglected area and the plan was to develop a larger cultural area there. On March 5, 2011 the first work assignment with garbage disposal took place. The first film screenings took place in the open-air cinema Pompeii, which opened in August 2011 and owes its name to the ruins of the part of the building damaged by fire.

In winter 2011 the first concerts took place in the basement of the Haus Zukunft in the newly established music club Tiefgrund.

On January 6, 2012 - on Epiphany - the first hall of the Kino Zukunft was put into operation, and the second hall followed on February 23, 2012.

In May 2012 the first exhibition took place in the art gallery Bildersaal Zukunft. The first in-house production had its premiere in the Theater Zukunft in autumn 2013. And on April 30, 2014, the future brewery presented itself to the public for the first time with a brewing festival in the forest garden.

Pompeii open air cinema

Open air cinema Pompeii: Samsara Blues Experiment plays Metropolis

The open-air cinema in the future has around 100 seats and is the longest open-air cinema in Berlin every year. The annual opening ceremony with film, concerts and party always takes place on April 30th on Walpurgis Night . The open-air season ends at the end of September / beginning of October. From 2011 to 2013, 35 mm film technology was used for projection, and digital since the 2014 season.

An architectural peculiarity of the open-air cinema are the changes caused by the major fire in Laskerstraße in 2009. The brick walls, which were almost intact and not plastered from the fire, except for the inevitable blackening of smoke, are crowned by crenellated omissions that were created by the burning out of the roof and the wooden beams. The overall picture is strongly reminiscent of the excavations in the ancient city of Pompeii, so that the naming for the open-air cinema can be found here.

In addition to the arthouse and mainstream summer cinema that is common in Berlin, smaller productions will also be shown and screenings will take place in the presence of the filmmakers when the cinema opens. The program also includes film concerts and other concerts under the motto Live at Pompeii . The Berlin psychedelic and stoner rock band Samsara Blues Experiment for the long version of Fritz Lang's Metropolis gave two now legendary film concerts .

Cinema future

Documentaries are another focus of the program. International films are preferably shown in the original language versions with subtitles (OmU). Audience discussions with filmmakers and the monthly shorts Attack! complete the program.

The daily evening performances start at 6:00 p.m., there are a total of six performances in the evening, three in each hall. Depending on the program, up to eight different films will be shown per cinema week. The program appears monthly as a joint program for Kino Zukunft and Tilsiter Lichtspiele - and in summer also for open-air cinema Pompeii - and is published on the Internet and in print.

Together, the three cinemas Tilsiter Lichtspiele, Kino Zukunft and Freiluftkino Pompeji form the Kino-Troika Friedrichshain . Accordingly, there is the Troika card : a stamp card that enables visitors to all three cinemas to attend every 7th screening free of charge.

Theater future

The theater, located in Haus Zukunft, celebrated its first theater premiere on September 19, 2013 with the in-house production Labyrinth based on a play by Reiner Groß and directed by Kai Lange. Since then, the new discovery of an ancient art has been postulated under the motto No Money and No Dead Authors . The second in-house theater production, Das Kurz Leben , also comes from the same author / director duo .

Picture room future

Since the opening in May 2012, there have been monthly changing exhibitions with paintings , drawings , graphics , photographs and installations in the 90sqm art space of the picture room in Haus Zukunft . When selecting the themes and artistic means of design, the responsible curator places great value on variety and diversity, but also on a special artistic perspective.

Brewery future

Boiler room in the brewery future

In April 2014, the small future brewery started operations in the forest garden. Here unfiltered and naturally cloudy types of beer are brewed, with which the house of the future is supplied. The range includes two standard varieties, a light one called the Golden Future and a dark one called the Dark Future . Both varieties can be characterized as light and digestible.

The master brewer built the robust brewing system completely himself in order to keep the investment value for the entire system as low and the functionality as high as possible. The boiler room of the brewery can be seen through a large shop window from the forest garden, even if there are no display values to be viewed - as is usual in other breweries.

Jazz bar future

Jazzbar Zukunft is the title of a fixed series of events in the cinema bar. Jazz concerts with international jazz musicians have been held every Wednesday evening since 2012 , with which the whole musical diversity of the genre can be explored.

TIEF (formerly Tiefgrund - The Small Venue)

The music club in the basement of the Zukunft building has been organizing concerts since the end of 2011. Since then, the Tiefgrund has received special attention in the Berlin music scene as The Small Venue For Advanced Rock'n'Roll & Exciting Electronica because of the variety of its program and the authentic atmosphere. The bands performing here come from all over the world, from America to Russia and Japan, and accordingly attract an international audience.

The tree-covered garden is at the back of the Zukunft building, on Industriestrasse between the future and the About Blank venue . There is a separate entrance area from which the Ostkreuz train station and the water tower can be viewed directly.

Celebrations and parties are held in the forest garden and there are concerts and performances on a small open-air stage. The games of the European Football Championship / World Cup will also be broadcast there for public viewings . The brewery's future brewing festivals also take place here, which is directly adjacent to the forest garden.
